Don't like the 'hard work' line. Implies everyone who can't afford a mortgage doesn't work 'hard enough', as if it's always relative. It's effectively just getting on a high horse to wheel that one out. That's not the same as saying hard work isn't important and shouldn't be rewarded though.
That's the legacy of Thatcher and right to buy and the creation of the working class Tory / I'm alright Jack though.

Se post 235. I will paste it again here:

"Yes, you can buy your council house through the government's Right to Buy scheme if you meet certain eligibility requirements:
You've been a secure tenant of the property for at least three years
The property is your main or only home
The property is self-contained
You've had a public sector landlord, such as a council, housing association, or NHS trust, for at least three year"
12 years ago i had the right to buy , my children have grown up and 1 is renting and the other is buying their house . So after 27 years in our home we had to move to a smaller property with the HA POS doing a jig and as happy as Larry that it meant we no longer had the right to buy . If that has changed in the interim then i did not know that , and apologise for my earlier post to the contrary .

I'm absolutely loving the progress this Labour government is making in a short time. I love the vision for the future.

I was really skeptical at first, but what Starmer and this Labour government is already achieving is exceptional. It could be the best government in a lifetime.

When interest rates start to fall, we'll really start to see some amazing investment and improvements in this country. It's going to be an exciting, positive few years, so long as some unpredictable national or global crisis doesn't occur.

There was a sizeable number who didn't care if the country, or ever themselves, were better off, as long as Brexit gave us our sovereignty back.

The perceived gain in national freedom outweighed anything. Such was the hatred of the idea of foreigners having any say in anything to do with British Life. I found it impossible to argue with such sorts.

And the same applies to party politics. There are those who see socialism as fundamentally evil, and would rather be poor and hopeless than Red. And anything connected with Labour, even PPP, Tony Blair and cosying up to America, is all Red and Wrong. Even when Labour do something obviously right it is wrong because it is Labour that has done it.

I recall much the same attitude among certain sorts about black people born in the UK, back in the 60, 70s and 80s.
"If you want a n*gger for a neighbour, vote labour" (forgetting it was Enoch Powell who invite 'them all in')
And homosexuals. "It's Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve".

It is socio-economical political fuckwittery. Incurable, in the main.
Absolutely spot on. Luckily, we’re 8 years down the line from Brexit and I’ve personally got to the stage where I shrug my shoulders at such ignorance and walk away. There’s no line of argument, no data, no facts, that will ever sway such a person.

No worries, mate. If you are within 3 years of the move you may have 'reset' and are not yet eligible again to the right to buy.

My in laws have not exercised the right to buy their council house. They have had it, in rural Oxfordshire, for 50 years. When they die it will go back to the council. They have not engaged with an opportunity to make a few hundred grand (they could have done this) because, frankly, they don't have the wherewithal to engage with 'complicated' finances. In many respects they are the ideal council tenants.

In the conversation about why they were built (I think it was @WATFORD zero who was explaining to willfully-thick potty) one should not forget to add another reason: slum clearance. In London there were thousands living post war in slums, paying rent to slum landlords. I remember watching a documentary in the 60s where scores of people explained how their lives had been transformed when they were moved from the tenements into new council flats, with central heating and an inside toilet. Horrible by today's standards but the impact on infant mortality and short lifespan were immense.

That Thatcher actively crushed this, bribing council house owners with tax payers' money, trashing the rental sector in the process, and condemning millions of low income earners to servitude, is one of the great modern disgraces.

And yet....the system that allowed people who had become relatively well off to live high on the hog, two foreign holidays a year, while those who strove to own their own home struggled (I posted on this a few weeks ago citing my own experience), was f***ed by the 1970s. It needed rough tweaking. Instead Thatcher blew it all up. Because it was socialist.

Do you want to live in a country where you are dependent on the gamble that the interest rates go right so you can live or prosper? I asked someone on the right this as well. It does imply that you have been priced out of life to a lesser or greater extent.

No. But this government is quite clear that it is not taking any risks. It is being fiscally responsible for a change, which is bizarre as many would say that is a quality of the Conservatives rather than Labour, even though the former demonstrated the opposite in the recent decades, getting us in record debt with nothing to show for it.

I am totally on board with Starmer and this Labour government, it really is incredibly impressive, although it makes me feel sad that so many years have been wasted, and that it will take the country so long to recover from the corruption and mismanagement.

Fingers crossed, this government will get two terms minimum to get the country back on its feet. If interest rates do come down and Labour gets to spend what it intends to, while getting us in a better financial position as well, then this could be one of the great governments of all time.

I'll be genuinely interested as to how many of those boxes are able to be ticked in 3 or 4 years time.

We'll see.

One I very much doubt is the dentist part. Speaking with a dentist chum last week, he really doesn't see how viable it is nowadays....the costs involved far outweigh any income derived from the NHS.

Additionally should that happen, then many folk will head that route rather than go the current private route, the demand would be substantial.

As I said, we'll see.....
If your chum is talking about advanced treatments such as veneers and implants, he is right, I can`t see them provided on the NHS any time in the future, I see no reason why regular, preventative check ups, fillings and extractions, where necessary, should not be accessible for all.

They have inherited a total skip fire and tough decisions are having to be made. Five months in and people are expecting miracles which is frankly ridiculous, the right wing press are more batshit than ever.

Things will get better.

Oh no, think about the poor rich people.

It’s not a stupid idea, it’s just not an idea that will ever happen in this country because we’d prefer people to be homeless or not have access to reasonably priced housing, rather than have a rich person be a bit poorer.

In terms of the OPs question - I voted for them, but I’m on the fence. This country is so far down the rabbit hole, with the media so controlled by the right wing, with public services that could take decades to sort, and we’ve cut off our noses to spite our own faces with Brexit… so it’s almost an impossible task at present to turn it around, back to the level it was at in the peak Blair/Brown years.

However, the thing I fear the most is that, when they inevitably don’t pull a magic bullet out of their backside, many will turn to Farage as their perceived solution. If that happens, this country will be irreparable.

So first time buyer couple with a big mortgage find house prices drop and they are in negative equity are rich people are they ? See the 2008 financial crash for reference.

No, he was talking about regular, daily stuff. The hourly cost of a 'chair' has increased significantly and NHS money will be hard pushed to cover that. The incentive for private work far outweighs the NHS work apparently, and so I maintain that I sadly would find this a difficult scenario to envisage.

Time will tell, and maybe prove this theory incorrect.

Absolutely too right, any facility which allows another buyer to jump on the housing ladder should be admired.
My parents bought their council place and then moved on up the ladder...keeping the process going.
This is why I support IHT, it will allow the state to reclaim the tax-payers money your parents benefited from.

Not at that threshold level it won't.

Sorry but I'm struggling to keep up. On the subject of inheritance tax, was that last post a load of bullshit ?

How do you work hard for your inheritance? I suppose I should ask Rupert Murdoch’s latest wife?
Idiot.
My wife and I come from council estate backgrounds, Deason and Stringer schools.
We've made a couple of quid working, and you think we should give it up?
Righto.

Or was this one, because I'm sure you wouldn't make things up to suit whatever 'argument' you're trying to make
