i just cannot understand why everyone can’t see this.

You are Bart V in that situation, stood in the centre of your goal, as the guy out on the left shapes to cross. IF Armstrong is not there, the ball can ONLY reach Archer at the far post. The split second the cross is hit, you are flying across your goal toward the back post to cover as much of the goal from Archer‘s angle as possible.

This gives you a chance of saving Archer’s effort.

With Armstrong where he is, you cannot begin to consider Archer until the ball has passed the striker in the centre of the goal - delaying your movement toward the far post, and reducing your hopes of making a save.

Arguing about HOW MUCH impact his presence makes is irrelevant. If it makes ANY impact - he’s offside.
This is obviously right, but apparently the only reason it was given as offside is because the offside player attempted to play the ball

Think they score if he's there or not. Quite happy about the decision and not sure it would always would go in our favor.
I think it was last year at Villa, player standing in front of keeper in an offside position so directly blocking his view but the goal was given.

What most people are missing is that the line drawn for Archer was not in the right place.

You can see from the stills, I know you have to take perspective into account. It didn't look right at the time on the box and it doesn't look right when I've looked at it afterwards.
I thought Archer was offside as well....

We absolutely got away with one and almost every pundit or media piece I have read/seen has said the same. To say otherwise is blue and white tinted glasses in the extreme. If that had happened against us this place would be wild.

And the panel that adjudicates afterwards said this was an error and the goal should have been overturned.

But too late for us. Sure the referee can get things wrong as its split seconds but VAR should not have got it wrong.

Referees (and Var assistants) should be assessed by an independent panel for each game. The one who performs worst each season should be sacked or perhaps the worst one below an acceptable level of failure.

It would be wild BUT but its correct to letter of law and if there was a consistent view from VAR and Refs then it would be much less of an issue.

Watch Saturday’s Football Focus. Both pundits said the linesman & referee called it right, and after four minutes, VAR backed that up.

I was talking to a Saints fan after the match, he was very agitated about the decision but still happy to have picked up a point. He said the one consolation was that the journey home was not too far and he was looking forwards to seeing his wife and sister.

”That’s nice“ I said “there will be two happy faces to greet you when you arrive home”

”No”, he replied “Just the one”.

They shouldn't have been checking Archer before checking Armstrong, waste of 4 minutes. Didn't they say that VAR checks were going to be quicker? Disrespectful to both players and spectators.

I was at home, so watched the replays. The first part of the VAR check was to see if JPVH made contact when he swung his leg at the cross. That would’ve cancelled out any offside.

I can understand why ordinarily they would check in that order. However, if a player is clearly miles offside and could be involved, then it makes sense to look at that first. If he’s attempted to play the ball, job done.

Perhaps they’ll tweak their procedures. After all, they’re still ‘taking the learnings’ on how to use VAR properly. Goodness knows how long that’s meant to go on. You’d have thought they might have got the hang of it by now.

Listening to talksport on the way home after the game.

Caller "H" from Southampton : *rant* "This is ridiculous the Championship is much better without this VAR nonsense" *rant*
Jason Cunty : "If this was the Championship, the linesman flagged off side so no goal"
"H" "Yeah, but"
The sound of a violin was then played in the backgrounf
So they’ll be happy when they’re back in the Championship next season 🤭

It doesn't help when you've got idiot pundits like Shearer muddying the waters by claiming it should have stood.
