I’m no economist but don’t you need to keep interest rates high to support a weak currency? Double whammy?
I'm not sure. I'm not an economist either. But one adverse effect of a weak currency, as Joe Blogs explains in post 17,725, is that as your currency declines against other currencies, you are effectively importing inflation, as everything you buy is rising in price as your currency falls.

Yes, and the high interest rates have protected the value of the currency to some extent. However, the economy is so shot that even with very high interest rates, the currency is still falling. Even the Russian bank buying currency isn't stopping it.

I guess it could become a fairly continuous drop, potential currency buyers (apart from the Russian bank) just keep holding off as they expect interest rates to rise further 🤔. .. which they probably (hopefully) will.

Escalating fast. The opposition now reportedly have weapons.

This is a digression, but I've always found it bizarre, that during the first main conscription of Russians, those who didn't want to fight, had no friendly country to flee to, other than Georgia, which Russia had previously taken bites out of, by doing a 'Donbas' to Abkhazia and South Ossetia in the 1990s.

Now that Moscow has come a cropper over Ukraine, perhaps a few other chickens are coming home to roost.

Russia must surely be getting stretched militarily, military police wise...at some point this must show.

It should, but we don't know the extent to which the Kremlin will find money from existing budgets, to keep the show on the road.
Judging by Putin's grim determination to plough on with the war, it could be more than we think.

By the way, we've not heard any more of the 'blood feud' between Kadyrov and the Ingushetians in Dagestan. Either they've patched up their differences or news is not getting out.

It’s already showing. They’ve got NK troops fighting for them and so are very stretched.

itkll be very interesting to see how the NK troops fare. They are allegedly crack troops but in reality only in NK and are unproven. If they get a taken to the cleaners, it’ll cause not only Putin problems but also Kim Ill whateverface.

two birds one stone?

What's all this from Patruschev, who usually remains in the shadows?

Has the maskirovka dial been turned up to 11?

'To achieve success in the elections, Donald Trump relied on certain forces to which he has corresponding obligations. And as a responsible person, he will be obliged to fulfill them' - Nioklai Patrushev, Russian newspaper Kommersant, and later reported in Newsweek.

My guess is it's a reminder to Trump to end the war in 24 hours, complete with the obligatory veiled threat and mischief making.

West is BEST
Should we not be boarding these vessels, detaining crew, and asking questions?

We know Putin probes for weakness and when he identifies it, he strikes.

He’ll just keep probing until he gets his chance if the only consequence is his ships get escorted away.

NK troops have no experience in the freezing Russian/Ukrainian winters and apparently have been issued with basic Russian uniforms and little training. Recipe for disaster (we hope). Into the meat grinder they go…..

The NK troops have been indoctrinated that they are the crème de la crème and that all others are inferior, which will not go down well with the Russians. It’s a recipe for disaster .. tragic
