One thing I've never understood is why, in the States, do you have to declare either Democrat or Republican when you register?

In the UK you just register to vote
You don't have to. Nobody makes you register for one party or the other. You can just register and vote. And registering with one party doesn't mean you have to vote for them, or go to any of their meetings, or pay dues.

What it does mean is that you can vote in the primary for your state if they have a closed primary. Some states have open primaries, meaning you can just ask for the Republican or the Democratic ballot on the day (but not both!), others have semi-open ballots where you an switch registration basically on-the-spot.

Even in closed primary states you can just switch your registration. You just have to do it some time before the primary.

I'm not sure why people place SO much faith, if you can call it that, in betting markets that fluctuate so wildly (as everyone knows).

I'm also not sure why so many people believe stuff that Trump says when he has a long history of talking shit. On the subject of his plan to kick out the "20-25 million" illegal immigrants (or, as Trump would put it, people from insane asylums), there was a great deep-dive by John Oliver last week about why his plan is either unworkable or would cost the country trillions and severely damage the economy. But people lap up the veiled (or sometimes not so veiled) racism like it was water in a desert.

I genuinely think he'll hate doing the job. The rallies are what gets him going. Doing the job of president? Not so much. Mainly because there's not much in it for him!
He hates (the thought of) going to prison more than he hates "doing the job" (unfortunately).

At least the Latinos haven’t eaten all the dogs - That’s giving me some kind of comfort here that goodness will prevail.😅

This does remind me that I've seen my one neighbor go to the polls with her dog. I must have missed her today. But, she is/was a big Trumper, to the extent that I've seen her dog on a Trump leash. But this year, while she has a yard sign for the GOP senate candidate, she did not put out a Trump yard sign.

Get ready to kidnap her dog. She can't vote while she's worried about pooch.

Trump might not be a Nazi, but he certainly has made statements which sound very much like textbook fascism.

“During the initial remarks made on Friday, which caused outrage and alarm among his critics, Trump told the crowd to “get out and vote, just this time”, adding that “you won’t have to do it any more. Four more years, you know what? It’ll be fixed, it’ll be fine, you won’t have to vote any more, my beautiful Christians.”

Add to that his admiration for Putin, a defacto dictator, and numerous other examples I can’t be bothered to list, he’s certainly got ambitions to “reform” the role of President…
Trump isn't a Nazi, but he certainly repeatedly portrays all the appearances, opinions and messages of a full blown Fascist.

Would not read too much into this, this morning at Trump's rally he (Trump) was saying "we need to pretend we're losing, so we make sure to go out and vote"

Probably juet a tactic to try and gwt anyone who is umming and ahhing off their backside

How depressing. Hoping it turns out like the Brazilian elections a couple of years ago where Bolsonaro looked to be favourite but Lula caught up on election day.
Not looking that way though.
I've already cut out Sky News from my daily viewing here but if Trump wins I'm thinking of avoiding all news as it's just too depressing these days.
