Finally, Brighton band Tribe of Ghosts debut album CITY is out. It's been a long time coming but the album launch gig last week was outstanding and the ablum is a stunner, best of the year so far for me I think.

I've been meaning to post on this thread for a while but haven't had the time of late to make the mixcloud compilations I used to do.

Anyway, some long players that have been spinning on the Trees turntables:

Pharmakon - Maggot Mass

Is that a melody I can hear between the guttural screams?

Trstwch Y Fenywod - Trstwch Y Fenywod

Welsh folk with bass and drums that would not be out of place on a Sisters of Mercy track

Previous Industries - Service Merchandise

Intelligent rap that focuses on memory via a trip through a defunct shopping mall.

Reymour - NoLand

Swiss duo channel post-punk, French chanson and Julee Cruise

Daisy Ray - Shelly

Belgian arty post-punk

Following on from albums - a few of my favourite tracks:

Kitsuko - The Policeman Shots

The Pill - Scaffolding Man

First single, Bale of Hay, whilst great, is heavily influenced by Wet Leg - not surprising as this lot are from the Isle of Wight as well. However, this second single changes tack a little, helped by changing the vocalist

Lechuga Zafiro - Bottelharpa

How to make a dance track which does not sound like a dance track

Backwash - Wake Up

Epic tune that runs through the whole gamut of emotions

Lael Neale - Electricity

Been on several times this afternoon.

One or two of the songs are a touch too gushy for me but the overall product is up to her usual high standards.
I love her voice, and some nice plucking.
Didn't know whether to post this in this or the iPlayer thread, but there's a couple of songs there under the Jools/Later category -- including Caroline which is just majestic. There's a Nubya Garcia track on there too.

After seeing the Troxy show last night, and followed it up with the session on iPlayer performed on Thursday, I've listened to Songs of a Lost World this morning. It's an extraordinary achievement and really poignant, and I'd go along with Petridis and say it's their best since Disintegration, ie in 35 years. EndSong is the stand out track for me.
The album is right up there in AotY territory for me, but still think Beth Gibbons warrants that.

Kosmischer Läufer 'Track Club EP'...

1970's East German Krautrock to inspire their athletes at the Olympics, or some Scottish hoaxer from recent times? Who knows...

I hadn’t got round to listening to The Cure’s new album until today - I wanted to give it my undivided attention.

I have played it through five times so far - it’s magnificent, isn’t it? Incredible that they can produce this level over 40 years after they started, and they were brilliant then.

Meanwhile, Primal Scream also released a new album this week. I have always been a fan, and stuck up for them when many were criticising their output.

But this…is awful. No tunes, Bobby’s voice has deteriorated, no…oomph. A huge disappointment.

Never been over-enamoured with PS, and won't be listening to their new album. Have been listening to The Cure and particularly SfaLW after not doing so much for several decades. It is an extraordinary achievement. Still think EndSong is the best track, but WarSong is creeping up on me too.

I have playing the album daily. Magnificent, incredible and extraordinary are perfect terms to describe it. It works as an album, from Alone right through to EndSong. The opening instrumental part of EndSong is so clever, it gives the listener time and space to reflect on what’s gone before. I looked up the lyrics to And Nothing Lasts Forever and had tears in my eyes.

i also listened to Primal Scream and was excited when I heard he’d worked with David Holmes, a DJ and producer I remember and love from way back. It’s quite flat.

It's also made me listen to my back catalogue of the Cure - much of it on vinyl, which I've not listened to for quite a few years; simply reminded me of how good they were/are.

It's really great that this has felt like a proper old-fashioned 'event' - like album releases used to be.

The lyrics throughout are profound, and that's another adjective that we can add to that list.

Yes, the reason why I haven't listened to them much over decades is because I don't have a set-up record player and have the first x albums on vinyl, and just their somewhat pedestrian previous album on CD. Also agree about the excitement and anticipation associated with album releases in the past (nostalgia, moi) -- that's another lost world.

Yes. I hadn’t thought of this but you’re so right, it was an event.

After 16 years and being teased for the last 18 months it bloody well needed to be an event.

Bloody good album though.
