Reform effectively are simply Liberal lite in the same way that UKIP were before them. not in policy but in their effect on the make up of parliament. Nobody who votes Liberal expect them to win a majority and form a Government, their number of seats in the house generally rise and fall based on how pissed off the electorate are with the Conservative Party. I accept that some Liberal MP’s get elected for local constituency reasons.
The proud scouser with an apprentice degree, Gillian Keegan, managed to lose a 22500 majority here. I think the local constiuency reason for electing a Liberal was that Ms Keegan was not very good at anything. I think the electorate here was reasonably well pissed off with the Conservatives, they'd been losing seats on the District Council to the Liberals for some time.

In neighbouring Havant, the Conservatives held the seat with Labour second and Reform not far behind. I've never understood how Havant (which makes Crawley look nice) is so Conservative. Those pissed off in Havant voted Reform and 100 more of them would have meant a Labour win.

One’s a statesman, the other’s an obnoxious shit. He’s going to wipe the floor with her.
I wouldn’t be so sure.

Starmer is a calm, measured, forensic sort of chap who obsesses about ‘the rules.’

Badenoch doesn’t give a shit about the rules. She’s an absolute street fighter who considers no blow to be too low.

I would imagine there willl be a lot if strategising going on at Labour HQ about how best to handle her, because in a straight fight across the Dispatch Box she’ll smash Starmer.

Smash in the sense of producing some videos with click-baity titles like "Badenoch DESTROYS Starmer!", probably.

Smash in the sense of convincing anybody outside the existing minority of people who already agree with her, perhaps not. We'll see. Prime Minister's Questions rarely has any bearing on anything anyway.

Oh she’ll definitely appeal to people who think “shouty people are good politicians”. Fortunately that’s quite a small constituency.

Oh yes. I don’t disagree with any of that.

All I’m saying is that she doesn’t do niceties, will never accept she’s wrong and doesn’t take prisoners. Anyone who thinks SKS is in for an easy ride is, in my view, mistaken.

Much like Hague was often seen to have ‘won’ PMQs but it didn’t translate into votes, I reckon Badenoch will easily knock Starmer all over the Chamber, but it probably won’t do her much good electorally.

Fun to watch though

She’s not shouty, though

She just says what she wants to say and doesn’t give a shit what anyone thinks.

The thing is, appearing not to give a shit what people think is normally considered a positive.

Actually not giving a shit what anyone thinks leads to being what's normally considered a "****". And isn't a good way to convince people you're right.

Yep.

I still remember her incurring the fury of the Speaker for announcing something in the press instead of the House, then when the Speaker later rebuked her she replied that she was “sorry it wasn’t to his sequencing”, causing Lyndsey Hoyle to fly into an absolute rage.

Like I say, she absolutely doesn’t give a shit about convention, winning friends or staying out of fights. I expect SKS will be busy booking up some more overseas trips.

I have to agree, Gillian Keegan was our MP, and to lose such a majority in ‘Chi’ of all places is quite some achievement. I never thought it was possible.
Jess Brown-Fuller appears to be a personable new face, but what she will be able to achieve for her constituents remains to be seen.

Hunt? Even by Labour/Green supporters I've never heard him slagged off (away from the tiny nsc bubble where every Tory for 20 years has been hated).

IDS, Truss, Kwarteng, Braverman, Patel and all the foxhunters ... widely despised.
Hunt was slagged off mercilessly when he was Health Secretary. One of the most hated politicians at that time.

Wilson won a majority in double figures once. In 64 and the 2nd 74 election he had majorities of 4 and 3, and the 1st '74 election led to a hung parliament. He also had to hold a referendum on leaving Europe. :lolol:

By contrast, Brexit was the result of the Conservatives winning a majority in parliament from a much smaller percentage of the vote. The same 2015 election that saw the SNP turn about 50% of the vote into 95% of the seats.

The greatest con trick ever played is people being convinced that FPTP leads to stability, and that all the "unusual" results are in any way unusual.
You may be right.

But we have no contemporaneous control group so all comparisons (and assertions, including mine) are speculative.

At the end of the day, it is what it is.

And I'm not remotely moved to rip it up and start again. But you knew that

I’m seriously considering a theory whereby, regardless of the political affiliations of the governments past, present and future - and almost entirely due to the nature of the political and social problems both worldwide and nationwide intensifying and worsening as time moves on, every UK government now and in the future will be worse than the last.

With the current incumbents, it is far, far too early to call it YET……. but I think I could be on to something.

Worrying.
Give me a shout when SKS has criminally broken rules he introduced himself, there’s been a budget that crashes the economy and doubles borrowing costs, the whole country’s on strike and the government haven’t put any money aside for the infected blood and Post Office victims 👍

Do you live in a parallel dimension ?
I can’t remember the last time a PM appeared on Question Time. I suppose ‘Right Brain’ assumes that there will be a change to this convention.

But old Ron has an ‘opinion’ and is, I suspect, one of those folks who lives a life where the validation of opinions with fact or evidence is unwarranted.

Remarkably like erstwhile NSC stalwart Mouldy Boots.

I’ve said it before… we were all looking for a bit more than, “better than Johnson and Truss” weren’t we??? Yet it’s always your first port of call for your now infamous Whataboutery 😆

You could be right about Starmer not breaking the rules but those are hardly the problems of Government are they ? About as relevant as £32k worth of clothes, simple misdirection

The budget to crash the economy? Give it time I think this one is a contender and Rachel Reeves has made no bones about it with her statement:

Reeves said, “Yes, businesses will now have to make a choice, whether they will absorb that through efficiency and productivity gains, whether it will be through lower profits or perhaps through lower wage growth."

Watch this space.

But as much as you like to mock people who disagree with you in your usual condescending manner, I simply feel that the political financial and social problems of this day and age are extremely difficult for any Government to deal with and I don’t expect any success on the big subjects, do you?

Where will the NHS be in 10 years time after two terms of Labour? The obvious answer is it couldn’t be worse, right?
