No
dwayne selected the squad today
Isn't there a stat that suggests that we never/hardly ever lose when Jack is on the pitch? ???

Well, at least there weren't any Americans on the pitch then. FH has American citizenship but he technically wasn't "on the pitch."

Danny Welbeck has two Ghanaian parents, and chose England over Ghana

Tariq Lamptey has two Ghanaian parents, and (eventually) chose Ghana

Evan Ferguson has one Irish parent, and one English parent, but obviously chose Ireland

So for anyone at all bothered by yesterday’s line up, you can probably cling to something there.

FWIW personally I think we were missing a bit of identity. Remember that the English players missing - Dunk, March, Hinsh - are not just ‘English’ - they are all local, Albion academy graduates, with family connections to the club.

In case there is any doubt, I neither care nor mind that we had an all-overseas eleven for a period of time.

I often marvel at the ridiculous quality of the players we now get to enjoy by running down the eleven on the pitch and noting their international representations, eg

Current Dutch international
Former Dutch international
Current Dutch international
Brqzilian
Current Colombian international
Current Turkish international

Etc etc

And doing that yesterday I noted Welbeck was the only English/British player in the starting eleven, and he was almost certain to be subbed for an overseas player.

Which simply had me wondering if that had happened before. Given Lewis Dunk’s near ever presence as our squad has become more and more international, I suspect not, but thought one of our resident statos may know definitively.

Someone today said…..we have spent over £200 million on players who are no better than what we had last season….. it’s early days but in a way I can see the argument.
Same points at this stage as last season. But last season at this stage I thought we were above where we should be in the table (ie: outperforming our ability), this season I think we're a bit below what with yesterday and Ipswich. Which makes me feel that we have a better squad.

I don’t want to come across all Farage, I’m just interested, so back to this question.

Was yesterday the first time our starting eleven didn’t feature an English or British player? Yes, I’m aware Webdini was a second half substitute.

To answer the original question. I think the first time we did this was away at Chelsea in a league cup tie in September 2023. Lost 1-0

Ah okay. I was at that one and I had forgotten that Tariq is Ghanaian. Might this be the first Premier League starting eleven?

Yeah, I didn't go but I remember seeing the team at the time they announced it. I suppose we'll count Lampety as Ghanaian. I think yesterday must've been the first time in the pl that we've started with an all overseas team yeah.

Tariq Lamptey was born in Hillingdon and has lived his entire life in England. He's English. No matter which country he has chosen to represent, that Chelsea cup game doesn't count as having no English players on the pitch.

Matt O’Riley is British. I appreciate he plays for Denmark but this doesn’t discount his British citizenship.

It is relevant I think, he is no longer eligible to play for England (through choice of course). Often this question comes up when looking at how many players England can select from.

It does show the injury effect though. If everyone was fit it wouldn’t have been unreasonable for us to play an all English defence of Steele, Hinshelwood, Dunk, Webster, Lamptey next week and three fifths of that would be Sussex boys!

It depends what the question is. If the question is “Is this the first time Brighton have fielded a complete team of players who are not currently eligible to play for England” then it’s relevant. Otherwise it isn’t.

Absolutely. For me, the nationality of the player should only be relevant to a sporting question (I.e. could they be selected for England) and not where they were actually born. We don't want to appear to be a bit Farage after all 🙂
