it seems very unlikely that either of these would lead the Conservative Party into the next General Election... but who knows?

Don't underestimate the stupidity of the electorate. These two are right-wing loonies whose policies are the sort that have wrecked the country, yet there will a large rump blaming immigrants and overlooking the value of the ECHR (which they want to leave) or the value of an independent, tax funded BBC.

Jesus - what an absolute mess.

I've read a suggestion that some MPs thought Cleverly was through so voted for their preferred second candidate or, perhaps, the one they thought Cleverly could beat in the final run-off, and it's backfired.

I'm not sure what I think of Cleverly in absolute terms, but he'd be a lot better than the pair of utter ****s left.

That wasn't exactly a tricky choice for me in the end.

This one is a bit more of a challenge... but I am inclined to see it as a vote for a Leader of the Opposition who can keep the government's feet to the fire rather than a potential future Prime Minister.

I feel a bit sorry for the centre-right like yourself. You're basically politically homeless for now, much as the centre-left had been for a decade or more when Labour had Milliband and then (much) worse, Corbyn, and the Lib-Dems were as weak as they've ever been.
