I think he’s a breath of fresh air.
Its not a situation where you sub your best ball winner lightly so I imagine he was knackered and had to go off.

The early sub of Ferdi made complete sense, defensively that’s as bad a FB performance as you’ll see.
I love it how both RDZ and now FH make early subs.

Slight injury and fatigue.
Was limping early on in second half and the was doubled over when he came off.
Baleba is a big unit, does a lot of running and is still very young.
I'm thinking the decision is more about player welfare than game management.

Wonder if the club regret not strengthening central defence in the summer ?
If fit i would keep Pervis and Joel as the wingbacks , but at the moment i can only see Ferdi next to Carlos or Jack , could see him being very dangerous backing the front 3 up . Otherwise if all fit ( i wish ) it is tough to see who you would drop for him .
That`s key for me , a manager who isn`t either too proud or stubborn to make changes if he makes a mistake .
The defensive formation in the 1st half looked like this for me.

Veltman was tucked in close to Dunk leaving the right back area to Minteh and Baleba to defend. It was hopeless as Maddison and Werner played quick 1-2s and broke our lines time after time.
It was equally hopeless on the left. Hürzeler loves an inverted left back or left wing back but I think this particular strategy has been found out and exposed by a number of teams including Spurs. Hinshelwood and Kadıoğlu could not get to grips with Kulusenski and Johnson who repeated the trick Maddison and Werner were excelling at. Whilst Kadıoğlu looked pretty strong going forward and supporting Mitoma, he was getting done time after time leaving the super-slow centre backs and Verbruggen exposed.
A total 1st half mess caused by the manager rather than the players in question.
So Hürzeler fixes it. There is a great analysis of this on the togetherBHA podcast that I’m basically summing up here.
In the 2nd half, we switch to a back 4. Veltman goes man to man on Werner and the brilliant Estupiñán does the same to Johnson and snuffs out the threat. In the meantime, those Spurs wingers don’t track our fullbacks when they go forwards and suddenly, we are outflanking them. Mitoma and Minteh are much more of a threat than they were in the 2nd half. Spurs fullbacks (still under instructions to steam forwards?) can no longer deal with them.
Then, do Spurs install a deep block and defend the lead or go for the 3rd? If Ange knew what the strategy was his players certainly didn’t. They looked punch drunk and in shock as we started carving them open.
Now that Hürzeler has had to perform ‘open formation surgery’ on the team at half time, I’m hoping we see the same solid back 4 for Premier League games until JPvH is ready to claim back his place. This inverted left back role with either Hinshelwood and/or Kadıoğlu is just not working out at the moment and needs a lot more practice and refining.
It’s now up to Estupiñán (who deserved to be dropped after not being able to spring the offside trap against Chelsea time after time) to continue the fine form he found yesterday and hopefully, make himself undroppable.
Finally a shout out to Welbeck and Rutter who humbled one of the most hyped centre back pairings in the Premier League. They simply could not handle the movement, power, pace and determination of our attacking pair as they ran and ran, swapped positions and battled and fought until Spurs were completely broken.
To be clear I’m not saying he’s rubbish. I was on the Roar recently saying he was an exciting signing. But, right now we have better options in each of the positions we’ve played him in or it’s said he prefers.
Recruitment team have no doubt seen ability beyond what he’s shown, but I couldn’t fit him in the starting line up right now.
Barco looks good going forward but pretty weak defensively. However, he's only a kid so plenty of time to fix that part of his game. From the little we've seen so far, Ferdi looks OK going forward but woeful defensively. Hopefully everyone improves and we're soon worrying what to do about trying to accomodate all the world class fullbacks we've got.

The inverted full back is to cover the issue in midfield when you have the 8s so high and wide, with the theory that it stops the opposition in transition if they get past the first press. It doesn’t work, as you say, because the opposition have been happy to leave their wingers high and wide, meaning they’re one pass away from being behind us. But that begs the question, as my original post alluded to, about whether it’s by design or whether we’ve just built the squad poorly again by not buying a back up left footed left back, or by not keeping Barco.

Poor in-game decisions from him in the last two games.
Took Baleba off against Wolves.
Something obviously needed to change today and did nothing. Then completely killed any chance of a fightback by bringing on the whole bench so we were all over the place.
Hope he learns.
