….and yet you started a thread on it….i’m not sure you will ever get the feeling of being a supporter at a game and the joy of your team winning the match…especially yesterdays circumstances and the other home win against MU
I made a thread of it because I thought the subject could be fun and twisted and a possible way to express your worst and best means of torture.
The rest of the whole "you don't know what it feels like to be alive until you've had a Freed from Desire sing-a-long" and all that other overdramatical "I barely had any fun with sports before this song came along"-sentiments... as I said: lets go with that, and I'll go with the sentiment that none of you have ever experienced football culture aside from last seasons trips to Europe. We're all different.

Again, mods can feel free to remove/lock this incredibly sensitive subject as it clearly is the core and soul of English football culture. Its my bad, I romanticised English football as more than that and thought it was possible to take a dig at this silly tune, but I was wrong and admit my mistake. I make some of those sometimes. I watched three seasons of Sunderland fan crying about the importance of football and then I see them go home ten minutes before the end in a top game which they trail 2-1. Maybe they were playing "Freed from Desire" at some pub in the surroundings so they all had to go?

That said... When I go to England, I will give my perception of English football a fair shot. I refuse to believe it can be this shallow. In my brain English football culture is going to some village in North Umptington and watching Worcesterstershire Sauce FC beat Buntham Rovers while having a chat or five with the people around, drinking out of a thermos bottle with coffee and liquor and tagging along in clever or sarcastic chants or other improvisations.

Premier League? Freed from Desire? VAR, Sky Sports, billionaire clubs, players and fans, entitled fans who can't be arsed to sing or even stick around if their team isn't providing "eNteRtAinment!!" (as if football isn't bigger than that)... sorry. Not for me. I like the football, the team and the talk around it, but to me there's way too many plastic ultra-commercialised soulless elements for me in English top flight football and "Freed from Desire" suits that development like a glove: "no need for you to be arsed to sing or make up chants or anything, we'll just play some songs from the radio after the game, force feeding you with the entertainment you can't create for yourselves". f*** it, honestly.

Imho - f*** goal music, cheerleaders, 90s tunes in the PAs, Graham Potter and Thierry Henrys fake white fake smiles in the studios, f*** sitting around waiting for Sky Sports to deliver the VAR drama, f*** paying 100 kr for a dry hamburger made by underpaid hungover students who dont give a shit, f*** not being allowed to bring in a bottle of water, f*** having a life scheduled according to what the TV viewers in China or USA wants.
f*** modern football.

And thats the final thing I have to say on this thread  Keep the goddamn culture/song.

The Premier League may be all glitz and glamour, But, can we do it, on a wet Tuesday Night in North Umptington?

Slow day Swanny?

British football is mostly about your mates, self deprecating humour and taking the piss out of the other team’s fans. Alcohol is often involved. Sometimes the young ones or the fat old ones who haven’t learned hit each other.

It’s the same whether you’re watching the Premier League or Worthing unless you’re a Japanese tourist who’s paid a fortune to watch one player.

All the razzle and messed up kick off times come from the media, without whom you’d be watching xHamster when we were playing.

No need for XHamster. Anyone tuning into yesterday's second half would have been able to witness a load of over-manicured fannies getting pumped.

…zzzzz

😉

…right now I’ve read some of it ..would you like jumpers for goal posts as well?

Some of the ‘modern’ stuff ..I sure don’t care about ..I have been watching the Albion since 1968 so I think I qualify for a person that’s seen a bit of change …but really hanging your hat on using this song as all that’s wrong about football today ..seriously! See the vids …old and young were loving 🥰 it

Oh and this “Mods delete or block this thread” rubbish ..that’s a couple of times you’ve quoted it ..what’s that all about? They are hardly going to do that ..come on u r better than this

A huge rant about how much you hate English football because it's over-commercialised from a guy who lives in Sweden and seems to love following, reading and writing about English football? My brain is failing to compute the irony of the whole situation.

Whilst I agree with much of what you say, yesterday afternoon I had my Trombolese and it was bloody fantastic!

Supporting a Club is more than talking/writing about it on an internet forum.

Many fans would agree with you about the commercialised excesses of the Premier League from an objective PoV. However, if you have never been to England or have absolutely no experience of watching Brighton play from the terraces or any other top flight English side for that matter, I don’t think you are in a position to judge the way Brighton fans celebrate a win in the moment Tbh.

‘When' you eventually do come to England and are heading up the A27 to the Amex one Sunday, can I suggest you keep going instead and head to the village of Kingston where you can enjoy a chat over a pint of real ale in The Juggs after seeing Kingston Village First beat Valley Rovers in the Sussex Sunday Football League - it might appeal to you far more than sitting with thousands of tone deaf, ‘plastic’ and ‘entitled’ fans at the Amex - you may even come across some old Goldstone era fans there who feel as you do 🙂

Get what Swanny is saying. It's the same with every town/city having the same shops, it's a bit sad to see so many clubs just doing the exact same thing instead of celebrating our differences, feels like an extension of the commercial premier league product. Can see how it could appear alien from afar.

Swanny hasn’t set foot inside our stadium, so how can he judge?
Look at @LamieRobertson video from Sunday, where the East Stand is celebrating, clapping and even singing the na na chorus. It takes a lot to get those sleepyheads going, so who cares what some Swede on the internet thinks?

What is the villain origin story of the resurrection of this song in recent years, wasn't it a pretty minor hit in the 90s? Can we go back in time and kill baby tromboleze?

As previously mentioned on this thread it gained new found popularity after Wigan fans adopted it for Will Grigg in 2016. Since then it’s never really been away.
