I don't care if he sings it or not. I'm more interested in whether he might be the next permanent England manager.

I think we should sing this. Harry Kane can do the “sugar sugar how now take your body downtown” bit.

A lot of folk are in between. For me the obsession with national identity is bewildering. I feel it is a form of insecurity. We only get three score years and ten and I'm not going to spend it saluting a flag and submitting to inherited expectations of who I should be. I'm just going to live and enjoy who I am.

Conversely, I do support England, but not so much as I support Sussex and the Albion. Sussex is my natural identity, not one that was hoisted upon me. I love my county, not because I was told to, but because it came naturally. Interestingly, I was actually born in Surrey and first lived in Hampshire. I'm an immigrant.

So it is possible to be indifferent towards England without following the pastime of putting it down. I'm not into the identity stuff, but I think it's a splendid country. This national anthem stuff though, it's just an song that is nowhere near as good as a lot of others. The Sri Lankan anthem at the Test matches is a banger !

I would actually say that it's not a song of unity but one of obedience. So I get why a lot of folk are out. As for Lee Carsley, I just want to see him do a job for my chosen national team. I care not if he sings a homage to the King. The more I think about it, the more I start chuckling. It's so silly.
I, if not fully agreeing with, certainly sympathise with a lot of what you say. And it is very eloquently written. It is the sort of measured post that I always want these threads to be full of rather than the sneering ones(from either side).

As I explained in a previous post, I’m not bothered if he sings the NA or not.
My reason for posting is more the fabricated outrage of various right wing organs that will use his non participation in the singing of the Anthem as a stick to beat him with.
I personally haven’t sung the NA for many, many, years, and will never do so again, but, I do quite like the majority of our country and I don’t believe my non participation impacts on my love for the country in any way. It certainly doesn’t affect the way I do my job,

I hope this has cleared up any confusion you have over my reasons for starting this thread.
TL;DR 😂

Jamie ohara said that Carslee had LOST the nation and is a TRATER by refusing to sign God Save the Queen and he must be right as you cant get a name as English as ohara so he should know. Carslee has never denied being a muslim to although no one has ever asked him so probably one of those

As a foreigner, the illogical idea behind it is what stands out the most.

The song is about saving the God or Queen... yet it is the only (?) song title that sometimes changes when the subject of dies.

It appears entirely unrelated to England and get the impression that you're on a journey abroad and need to convince the primitivite inhabitants that there's some sort of relation between your King and whatever could be considered God.

It also struggles under a modern day fact check. If we look at the actual end results, they look dire. None of these Queens or Kings went on to have eternal life. Sure, the current one appears to be immortal (we have no evidence of the opposite) but this is probably subject to change within 0-20 years.

UK might have the richest music history of any country on earth. Surely there must be one or two songs describing the hills of Scotland or height of busses or your local pub culture or something a little bit more England?
Can you please explain this in English ???

This is pretentious shite, and I have no idea why people have liked the comment. Blinded by bullshit. Flummoxed by flimflam.

The song is about saving the God or Queen...

What?

The song is about God saving the King or Queen. It is asking for divine intervention to protect the monarch. It’s really as simple as that. The song isn’t about saving “the God”, whatever that means. It’s in the bloody title…

it is the only (?) song title that sometimes changes when the subject of dies.

This is flat-out completely false. Norway’s national anthem “Kongesangen” changes in an identical manner to the England’s anthem, depending on the gender of the monarch.

Denmark has two anthems, one for the nation and one for the monarch. The monarch anthem actually references the monarch by name. “Kong Christian stod ven højen mast”.

Then there’s Japan, Spain, Thailand, Belgium, Lichtenstein, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia oh and f***ing…

SWEDEN.

You know, the country where you live?

Jesus.

It appears entirely unrelated to England and get the impression that you're on a journey abroad and need to convince the primitivite inhabitants that there's some sort of relation between your King and whatever could be considered God.
.

What on earth does this faux-intellectual word salad mean?! The vast majority of anthems are vague and non-specific to the geography of the nation. Most modern national anthems date from the 19th-20th centuries, where entire countries have changed immeasurably. Others are taken from moments in history, such as The Star Spangled Banner documenting the bombardment of Fort McHenry.

Of course the song is about connecting the monarch and God. you’re not making some amazing discovery. The monarch is the head of the Church of England, the national religion. I appreciate English history is not your strong point, much as Swedish history isn’t mine. The difference being I don’t post bollocks about Swedish history to a bunch of Swedes who know I’m talking shit.

Holy idiocy, Batman!

The national anthem is asking God to grant divine intervention on behalf of the monarch. Nowhere in the lyrics does it mention immortality, eternal life or any of the other stuff you just made up. “Long to reign over us”, not “forever to reign over us”.

Surely there must be one or two songs describing the hills of Scotland or height of busses or your local pub culture or something a little bit more England?

Why in the ever-loving f*** would the English national anthem be about Scottish hills? You do realise they have their own anthem?
