ALBION SIGN MIDFIELDER O’RILEY

We are pleased to confirm the club has completed the signing of midfielder Matt O’Riley from Celtic, for an undisclosed fee.


The 23-year-old Danish international has signed a five-year contract until June 2029 with Albion, subject to international clearance.

His existing club has tweeted that he was on a flight to the UK to talk to Brighton, ergo they have evidently agreed a fee and given him permission to speak to us.

He will have told the Albion he was interested ages ago, as otherwise they wouldn't have bothered pursuing it, and he will have agreed contract terms, because that's how these things work. We speak to the agent, agree a suitable offer, and book him a private jet. He's already been to London for his medical, as he was filmed going into the hospital two days ago.

The chances are it's already done: it's just the Albion are holding off on publicising it because O'Riley was sorted out first and they want to spend today rinsing social media hell out of that one, before moving on to Ferdi when there's a gap in their output. Could be tomorrow, but we have a match then, so my money is on Wednesday, after the Crawley match reports and photos but before the weekend media conferences kick in.

O'Riley won't need a work permit but he'll still need international clearance as he's been playing in a league which comes under the jurisdiction of a different football association.

An anomaly of this is that every time Cardiff, Swansea, Wrexham or Newport County sign somebody from an English club, they have to apply for international clearance for the player as they're all affiliated to the FAW, even though they play in the English Football League. Applies even if the player himself is more Welsh than a leek and lava bread rarebit.

I seem to remember the Welsh FA being rather slow with confirming clearance in a few cases. One of them was Stephen Dobbie though so they could have just not bothered.

Might even be because after applying for a work permit, I have a feeling Kadıoğlu would need to leave the country again for immigration purposes (even if he only flew to Paris for the day- I'm sure there was another Albion player before who did this. Jahanbaksh maybe?) and then return.

You'd enter initially on a short term visa, and then once you'd agreed the contract, leave while the club applies for a work permit, and then return once you've got it.

The delay (if it even is a delay!) might simply be down to the fact that he arrived in the UK on Friday night, and the Home Office department who deal with work visas have all buggered off for the bank holiday weekend.

To be fair, we only had to worry about it with very occasional signings.

The Welsh clubs in the league have to deal with it for virtually every signing they make :lol:

But he’s moving from a foreign league. Obviously, he doesn’t need a visa/work permit. But the move does require international clearance.

Maybe he didn't come to sign for the Albion after all. What if, in some sort of Price-ean twist, he flew here to undergo some sort of cosmetic surgery?
