Agree with that and supportive of ref's in general on that basis (& Halsey in particular as thought he was great at Amex), but even live to me it looked like a bizarre decision that was largely based on Evans' theatrics. Shelvey only makes contact with Evans' left leg because he is caught by Evans' right foot as a consequence of the latter's uncontrolled lunge. There is no way Shelvey could have gone for that ball in a less dangerous manner, and he has been harshly done to. Ref got it wrong, and he and the disciplinary committee should admit that.....

Closest to that is two yellows but yes it should be an option (although Halsey decided to stamp his authority the wrong way).

I know the refs see it in real time but it makes you wonder why they're not more accountable for rash decisions.

Given where the ball goes you can hardly argue that Shelvey didn't win the ball. They both made contact with it before hitting each other.

Evans won the ball and was badly and dangerously fouled. Refs decision correct. The ball bounced of of Evans and Shelvey hit it with his standing foot (left one) not the one he lunged in with.

That's wrong. How the hell do you think the ball got to hit Shelvey's standing foot? It hit his other foot first. And Evans jumped in with 2 feet. Had Evans not jumped in two footed, he wouldn't have been injured. 2 yellows.

Are you serious? Watch the ball, not the feet. The ball moves right off Evans foot, then left as it is played off Shelvey by Evans.

I see Evans touch the ball first, Shelvey is A LOT higher off the ground than Evans is, and his studs are raised. Once Evans wins the ball he leaves both his legs in on him. Red card Shelvey.

So Shelvey was reckless in his tackle and he endangered the safety of his opponent - definite red card - anyone who thinks otherwise is wrong, as it doesn't matter that he didn't injure his opponent , it's that the tackle was reckless giving the POSSIBILITY of Evans being injured.

Evans was also reckless, with two feet and studs up , this however doesn't always necessarily HAVE to lead to a red card. Recklessness in itself is only a caution. However in this case Evans could be perceived to have endangered the safety of Shelvey.

But Halsey only has about 5 seconds to make his mind up.

Red card for both IMO.

Also people are saying he got the ball first . That doesn't matter anymore like a decade ago. A player could win a ball in a tackle , but if in doing so he seriously endangers the safety of his opponent, it's a red card.

Using excessive force means that the player has far exceeded the necessary use of force and is in danger of injuring his opponent. A player who uses excessive force shall be sent off.

Did Shelvey use excessive force? Yes. Jumping up with both feet off the ground. Was he in danger of injuring his opponent? Yes. Planting one of those feet on the shin of his opponent as he came to ground.

This angle doesn't do the full force of the tackle justice, and is at a lower angle to that which the referee would have seen it from. Evans legs are moving away from Shelvey in a sideways motion and towards the ball. There is little danger of him touching Shelvey. Shelvey is lunging in at the ball, in the direction of Evans, getting the ball played off him as he follows through onto Evans shin.

If you look at the position the players end up in after the ball has gone, I think that gives some indication of how much control they are in.
Also imagine that the other player has stayed on their feet (instead of lunging in). With that in mind Evans tackle looks much worse and probably would have taken Shelvey out. Shelvey's tackle appears more in control and I don't think would have taken Evans out at all.

It is Evans momentum which carries him through the point of the tackle and into the (admittedly) lunging Shelvey. In fact if you look carefully it is Evan's right leg which causes Shelvey's right leg to lift back up and strike him in the shin. If he hadn't lunged in Shelvey's foot would have planted firmly in the ground.

Obviously this is all with the benefit of multiple replays.
Yellow for both in my humble opinion.
