Prefer getting into those small carriages on the slam door trains, gave you some privacy especially if you got one to yourself.

I like the new trains and this week days 1 and 2 of the 07:03 ex Shoreham - Victoria has been the new one.

Neither do I. But at what cost?

How many people in wheel chairs use the trains compared to those who want to take a bike on? It is because of these toilets that bikes are not allowed on trains.
An increasing number of wheelchair users are taking up train travel, now that accessible trains are becoming the standard.

Incidentally, bikes ARE allowed on trains. Just not on peak hour trains which are likely to be over-crowded.

The reason that peak hour trains are over-crowded is that more people are using the railways now than at any time in the last 50 years.

What is really needed in the south-east is more track and station capacity to allow more trains to run. Unfortunately, major rail building projects cost BILLIONS. And no train operator with a seven year franchise is going to stump up the cash for some other company to reap the benefits - which is bound to be the outcome, since the "Strategic" Rail Authority learned to court favour by stripping unpopular train companies of their franchises.

And what makes a train company unpopular? For starters ... shutting down weekend services while track improvement work is done.

Surely it's Network Rail who close the tracks down for engineering works?

By the way... Line closed this Sunday, Brighton to Three Bridges.

Slam door trains are/were much better. Nothing better to sober you up on the trip back from London than to be able to stick ur head out of the window.

Seconded, at least if a train broke down u could get out, with the new ones, if it breaks down including the electic, its hard to get out, unless its the drivers door, but still time to move on.

That, of course, is true.

But who does the average member of the public grumble about? The train operator.

And it all contributes to their failure in the "Customer Satisfaction" surveys that influence the future of a franchise.

Who gets the complaints about reliability on the West Coast Main Line? Virgin, not Network Rail.
