I remember waiting outside The Goldstone for a night game in the pissing rain, while they cleared the pitch with a 'Whale' (?) water removal machine borrowed from SCCC. The game went ahead, but the pitch was only just passable. Early/mid nineties IIRC...

That would have been against Cardiff City and the match didn't go ahead. It was called off around 9.30 ish as had they started the game, the earliest they would have been able to finish would have been around 11:00pm and they were still taking water off the pitch at the south end. In fact I think the process actually broke the whale that they had brought in from the County Ground.

i once played for a pub team, used a very sloping pitch at top of wilson avenue.

that or the ref being a pub regular always meant we seemed to be winning, at half time...

Indeed and the pitch was reveresed. Pitch all white (covered in snow) and the lines cleared to show them effectively in green with a white line so we , the players and the match officials could at least see that there was grass
