I know they are called winglets but what are they for ? Rudder to steer, flaps for lift and desent, but winglets appear to be 'fixed' ? Also they don't appear to be on older aircraft and the size of a winglet appears to vary. Any one know ?

I watched a discovery program about them, they are a revelation to the airline industry. They reduce fuel consumption, and prevent the ends of the wings vibrating (?) by dispelling the vortices up and away from the main wing. Or something like that. All in all it aids safety, fuel usage and wear.

They are so planes can fit into slightly smaller parking spaces

You are all wrong. They are the small bits of plastic left when you detach the sections from the plastic frame after you take it out of the box and before you assemble the plane. You can buy small files from Model Zone that take these off or just ask your mum if she has a grade 4 nail file. It really does ruin the overall look of the finished model in my opinion and is just plain lazy. if a job's worth doing....

... since by dispelling the vortices at the wing tips more of the wing produces lift making it more efficient. Hence a bigger plane needs smaller wings.

Yes, that is of course my exact reasoning...
