With my generation their reputation has been ruined by growing up with kids who "supported" them avidly, had the Man United full replica strip, watch and jockstrap while we were rotting in Gillingham.

Remember when we played Man United in the league cup at The Goldstone? At school the next day EVERY kid who went sat in the away end and were cheering that they won! :nono: :nono: :nono: :nono:

And who remembers when Birthdays in Western Rd had an upstairs devoted to Man United? In the middle of Brighton!!!

Because of the way they behave, the greatest club in the world crap, the scores of southern fans and the arrogance that comes with them. Chelsea would appear to be catching up in the scum status tho, maybe something to do with a certain Mr Kenyon

Fergie getting a knighthood for Services To The Last-Minute Goal; 1999 smugness with the CL; general plasticness of their fans.

There's not much wrong with Man U as a club/team or with the real diehard fans. It's the sheer amount of hangers on that wear a red shirt but never ever go to Old Trafford that really piss me off. If "fans" supported a local side, the likes of Maidstone might well have survived and smaller clubs like us would be much better off.

If you see some one wearing an Albion shirt, or almost any other Football league shirt for that matter, you can be pretty sure that they actually go and support their team. Most Man U (and Chelsea and Arsenal) fans don't ever go to games. Sadly the same applies to England shirts, which is why I won't buy one.

They beat us in the Cup Final replay, so what? Smith SHOULD have scored. By the same token we should also hate Notts County, but it seems the venom is reserved only for Neil Warnock.

Children in Sussex have worn Man United kits for DONKEY'S years, long before United were 'good' and long before Gillingham. Walk around town centre on a Saturday afternoon and you'll see kids in United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Everton, Spurs, Newcastle shirts etc etc. I even saw a youngster in Eastbourne last week wearing a FULHAM shirt.

Smug in 1999? I think I'd be smug if I'd just won the European Cup.

Sorry, but I think any of the above 'reasons' could be attributed to any number of top flight clubs. People seem to hate Man United because it's fashionable. As Rookie demonstrates perfectly, Chelsea would appear to be the next hate figures, just because they might dare to dominate the game for a few years.

True to a point but an overgeneralisation of Man U fans. They still have a sizeable hardcore of passionate local supporters and are considered one of the top ten clubs to watch by the police for potential trouble, especially at away games. The 'real' Man Utd fans have as much dislike for the travelling army of synthetic supporters ((c) Half Man Half Biscuit) as the rest of us do.

I was commenting to a friend who has always liked United that if McShane keeps playing for us like he has so far and breaks into the United side after his stint with us, I may well be forced to support a United side if I happen to be watching one of their games. This was unthinkable two weeks ago and I'm quite ashamed

The Manchester United fans that I speak to (as opposed to watch while walking round supermarkets in Sussex) are those who live close to my dear old mum. Most of them have been supporting their local team for years and remember (with some pain) the Denis Law backheel that relegated them to the Second Division.

They seem just like fans of most other football teams.

Yep. Went out with a girl who's family were from Manchester and all diehard Utd fans, all generally the same as any other supporters I've come across. I also remember some of the games at The Goldstone when they came down and had a good go at wrecking the town. There were some nasty feckers at the Cup Final too, one of whom tried to nick my hat, the fat !!!!.

There's not much wrong with the team, Alex Fegerson excepted and there's not a whole wrong with genuine Manure fans (the ones that actually go to Old Trafford). The reason I can't stand them is the number of armchair fans they have who subsidise them by buying the merchandise and talk about the players as though they know them personally.

Pity these same 'fans' wouldn't know where Manchester is let alone Old Trafford.

I quite like them now, and I dislike Chelsea.

They have brought few a lot of good young players: Butt, Giggs, Scholes etc, they have a great manager, and it is a joy to watch the likes of Ronaldo on form.

Some reasons why I hate Manchester United:

1. 1983
2. The players - Norman Whiteside, Eric Cantona, Roy Keane, Rio Ferdinand, Gary Neville (I could go on) - what a bunch of overrated, hateful tosspots.
3. Alex Ferguson - again, a hateful tosspot. A truly nasty little man who took over from Ron Atkinson, a truly nasty big man.
4. Glory hunters - they have the largest amount of 'fans' in the UK living outside of their normal catchment area. At any one time I can go into Brighton and find five kids and adults wearing the strip but who have never been to Manchester. We all know the score here.
5. Their attitude to being a big club - http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/m/man_utd/4373075.stm. Just because you won the European Cup you don't have a God-given right to win things or be involved at the highest level, you still have to earn it.
6. The fact that their fans were willing to sacrifice everything at the altar of commercialism because it made them the biggest club in the world and then when someone they didn't like brought the club they throw the toys out of the pram like it's the biggest injustice of all time. Not for sale? You're on the stock market you clueless pricks, you were always for sale.
7. Celebrity fans - Angus Deayton, Ulrika Johnson, Zoe Ball, Jimmy Nesbitt. All have 3 things in common - they support Manchester United, they're not from Manchester and they all make me retch.
8. 'The Theatre of Dreams' - how utterly up your own arse have you got to be to give this nickname to your own stadium.

Sadly that's all I have time for now. Parts 2 through to 80 will come later.
