The great thing is, if you are English you are spoilt for choice. However the OP's question was worded in such a way as to be a worldwide personal hero.
Jnr. Skipper and I have been debating this for the last half hour or so, neither of us can come up with an answer, there are so many that fit the classical definition of Hero. We choose Alan Turing.
