Watching the streets, followed by the libertines on t.v today, a thought struck me...
Both bands are heralded in the british music press as being visionaries/saviours of british music. Now, i must admit the appeal of both is something that i've missed. As such i think they're both overrated. so i thought i'd pose the question "which band is more overrated, the streets or the libertines?"

I tihnk both are quality.

Libertines debut album is pure class, looking forward to the follow up.

The streets have produced a decent debut but then followed up with a classic album which I don't seem to be able to tire of.

Neither of them are to my taste personally but I have to admit that they are very good.

The Streets seem to have an element of the Emperors New Clothes about them (although in this case you have to not see the Chav wear!), if you don't like them somehow you no nothing about music. 'It poetry man'. Nope, poetry generally doesn't attempt to claim to be cutting edge music. Send the Chav bloke to speakers corner if he has that much to say!

Don't really know the Libertines, but the Streets are commercialised bullshit. Mike Skinner is just a record industry puppet with no balls to stand up to them.

Neither.

The Libertines are a very talented band although their new single annoys me. The Streets kick ass, end of.

why is The Streets commercialised bullshit? and from what I understand the record industry was trying to push his 2nd album through as soon as original pirate material was released which would have meant release a year ago, though Skinner refused as he wanted it released when he was ready for it

If you'd ever met him, you'd understand. He is absolutely nothing like his constructed media persona.

I have met him cos my mate had a press pass when he played at Concorde and he signed a print for me with 'happy birthday matt, stop trying to shag the birds and fight the geezers, mines a kronenbourg mate' and I'm not saying he's not overrated, I just think he's done a lot to get where he is by talent and not commercial hype as his first album was hardly promoted at all when it was first released

neither, the libertines are excellent and I don't think that they are overrated their first albums is class and hopefully their new one will be just as good.
The Streets are good too, I'm not a massive, but I don't think that they are overrated

dont get me started on how f***ing shit The Streets are!!!

the libertines are OK but nothing more than a good pub band.
how the music press can say this is the best music we are producing is beyond me!

Just compare these to the mid 90,s when we had-
Blur
Oasis
Pulp

I think, as I have stated before, music is abit stagnant at the moment theres no ground breaking bands around.

another band I dont get the Hype is- The Sissor Sisters, the first 4 songs on the album are good then its goes all GAY disco.

they do say that you reach a time in your life that all new music sounds crap, surely I cant have reached that point in my life at 29 can I?

I am looking forward to the new Embrace album though.

Hyped up by many to be the best British album for years on the basis that Chris 'Wanker' Martin from Coldplay wrote most of it.

It will be shit because Embrace are shit.

I agree that saying todays music is the best ever is wrong. Back in the mid/late 90's we'd had Oasis at their best, Pulp (who i personally don't like) going strong, Ash making one of the best debut albums of all time as (could include Stereophonisc and Travis here), the super furries making some inspired music (which they continue to do), Blur having already written some classics, the Charlatans going strong not to mention Cast, Sleeper et all all attempting to create great stuff but not quite making it. Nowadays there are a lot of bands doind exactly the same thing.

To find really inspired, creative and original music in this country nowadays we have to look to the more 'urban' side of things like Dizzee Rascal, The Streets, Goldie Lookin Chain, Wiley and a few new names coming through like Skinnyman (even though he's been around for donkeys) who is just breaking through and Estelle. Also there is some decent pop music about, that Natasha Bedingfield tune is pretty good.

I don't think music is stangnent at the moment at all, I have a stack of CDs in my car of new bands all of which are pretty good.

Razorlight have released what in my opinion is album of the year already
The Zutons brought out a pretty good and varied album
The Bees are a good bet for the retro crowd.
Keane are doing the epic ballad thing better than most before them.
Franz Ferdinand are really kicking it at the moment
Snow Patrol for your melodic indie pop.

to name but a few.

I think the Streets are utter class, Grand don't come for free is a complete album, the songs by themselves are good but when you put them together there is a great story to the album which twists and turns and is gonna go down as a classic of its genre in the future. After first proper listen I was wowed by this album and still pick up on new things about it that I like.

Its wrong to say somthing is shit just because its not to your taste, he clearly has talent and it clearly appeals to many people so it can't be shit.

Oh yeah and I also think that Natasha Beddingfield track is rather good. never thought I'd admit it but she isn't bad, better than her brother anyway.

You should check out the producers she worked with. She chose well and is working with people that made songs for Madonna, Britney and Destinys Child to name but a few.
