What's the difference between a BA and a BSc?

Barrel of Fun

Abort, retry, fail
I only have personal experience of a BSc and that had an element of mathematics and a practical slant. I lived with a couple of BAs and there was nothing practical, much more research etc. Everyone undertaking a BSc had to do some form of foundation maths, apart from those that did A-Level of course.

Basically, it does what it says on the tin. Arts vs Science.

I've got a computer science degree but it's a BEng although I had the choice to change it to BSc if I wanted, not entirely sure why it was classed as both

the theory vs practical thing used to be a loose and broad definition of the difference between a university and a polytechnic.

Rule of thumb:

BSc - Proper degrees

BA - Worthless (Drama, Film + TV etc)

Yup, that's the one. At the Uni I went to, some wag had written above the toilet roll holder in one of the toilet cubicle 'Get your BA Degrees here'.

Suffice to say, as an MSc and BSc student, I found it funny

They are? I did a Bsc and went to Portsmouth of all places.

Yeah my better half has a BA in Natural Sciences (a mixture of Chemistry and Biology); about as science-y as you can get! No idea why.

At other universities it does seem to be dependent on whether it's mathsy or not. I did a BSc in Economics (at Bath) but a couple of people on my course did BAs in Economics and Business (or similar) where they missed out the maths and did even more essay-type modules.
