I don't think Derby were ever "massive", the reason Clough's considered a great manager is because he won the league (and European Cup) with clubs nobody expected to be achieving at anything like that level.

Derby and Forest have a certain status because they won major titles within living memory. But so did Burnley and Ipswich a generation before that, and they're not even big any more. . They are from sizeable cities, but not major centres such as Leeds or Newcastle. And the same goes for the Sheffield clubs. Potentially big, but not massive*. Villa could, maybe should, be massive, maybe will be.

* Heresy, I know.
