Is this all a big NSC wind up or do some people really not grasp primary school maths?!?! :jester: :dunce: :jester:

It seems to be the oldies who are having the most trouble. et back to school!

Maybe it is the way we were taught at school. The wording seems to be ambiguous.

NO it isn't and NO it can't.

The laws of mathmatics say there is only ONE way this sum should be read.

it's still written in a completeley stupid way, if the BODMAS principle is used then there's no point in using brackets at all, but if brackets are going to be used they should make the sum as clear as possible in this case.

(132x23x43)+6-(4x7x3)

for heavens sake - it is 130,470 and you don't need the brackets. If I'm wrong I will wear a Brighton shirt at the next Palace match

Keyed it into a calculator that lets you enter the whole sum before pressing "=" and it gives 130,470. Case closed :)

f***ing hell. I sit there bored out of my brain at work, think it would be mildly amusing to ask the insider a maths question, and this is the response.

The answer is 130,470. Case closed.

Now can we all point and laugh at Stumpy Tim and Desperatfan3 who actually PM'd me the WRONG answer!

Anyway, seeing as you are all so interested in my brilliant questions, here is another one:

100 X (45/2) + 31 X (2X3) X 4 X (3x5) + =

Lets clear this up once and for all. If the question was ;

Whats 132 X (23 X 43) + (6 - 4) X (7 X 3) =, then the brackets are important, as the 6-4 takes precedence over the X (7 X 3). In this case the answer is :
Code:
132 X 23 X 43 = 130548 +
(6 - 4) X (7 X 3) = 42
                  = 130590
However, the question was not this, the correct answer as has been clearly explained is 130470, and the brackets in the question are totally irrelevant, as they have no effect on the sequence of the calculations.

132 X (23 X 43) + 6 - 4 X (7 X3)

then 23X43 =989

and 7X3= 21

therefore
132X989+6-4X21= 2741550

Always always 'do' the calcs in brackets first and then sub the value back in. Doing calcs is like reading abook .. from the left.

I must get a life
correct:smokin:

It's not a valid sum due to the extra plus sign at the end.
