A publican I know, since reaching the age of 65 kept working and put his entire pension each week into Premium Bonds until he had deposited the maximum permitted, either £30k or 35 k , not sure. He maintains that over a 12 month period he receives more money in winnings than the interest he would have received had he put the money in a deposit account.

I was also told that the vast majority of big winners are people who have bought bonds in the previous 18 months so if you have any dating back to the 60s or 70s you would be best advised to cash them in and buy new ones to stand more chance of winning. I am not sure if that is strictly true but it is what I was told and I am sure the learned ones on here will put me right.

They claim its not true, but if you look there the majority of the main prize winners have been on bonds 4 years old or less.... so I suspect it may be accurate enough.

I've got about 5 grands worth and I do get more in winnings that I would if it were in a high interest account - not by much, but its also nice to get the envelope through the door and the anticipation that it might be more than 50 quid

I have 8k's worth (but I bought 2k's more last week). Up until they raised the maximum a couple of years ago, I seemed to be getting a win practically every month, but I get must less now it seems.

I do, however, now recognise the envelopes that the cheques come in !

People who invested the £30k maximum three years ago will always have more chance that somebody who invested £3 in 1975, people paying higher rate tax now view them as a tax free investment, with no risk

Hrm, the reverse is true over here sales wise, less and less people have been buying them over time - the prize fund has reduced in size and the prizes are at times rather pathetic compared to the UK though...

Surely the odds are the same for each £1 bond, it's just a number that's picked by a computer at random. As has been said, there's probably been a shitload more bonds bought in the last 18 months than there were in the whole of the 60's.
