The question is: are they going to replace Root from within - which presumably means Stokes - or from outside? And, if the latter, is Haines in with a shout? If the selecters are going for someone new then he or Will Rhodes look like decent candidates. I can't see them taking such a radical move but maybe that's what the team needs. What a mess.

Haines? 23 year old Tom Haines of Sussex? I bow to your greater Cricket knowledge but my unresearched question is: what is his test match record and how many winning sides has he captained in red ball cricket? There are levels of desperation!!

Not sure who would win if Sussex and England played each other in a 4 dayer. I don’t think it would last more than 50 overs.

Going to do wonders for the home test match ticket sales. Can't see many home matches going into day 4 or 5 given England's continued inability to get past 250.

There'll still be a rush for days 1 to 3, of the usual 2 categories:

- Ex Public school boys, using it to zzzzzz network and to see how Rooters, Broaders and Stokers get on.
- Pissheads, only there for the day's liquor. A bit like the Amex.

Genuinely think those 90s teams would beat this shower of shit. No excuses now, never been so much money in the game through the ECB and the central contracts. Heads should roll.

Breaking all sorts of records home and away, of the wrong kind.

Are we now the Bangladesh or Zimbabwe teams of the 80's, also-rans in test cricket?

Agree with all of this but surely the current 100 format is too long and will bore fans, lets go for a 50 Ball game instead?

Oh and make 20/20 what it always should have been, 20 balls per innings...

2 hr tv show. 1hr 30 minutes preamble. 6 balls each side. 15 minutes highlights and analysis.

Certainly watching ex players talking about the old days is far more enjoyable than the crap served up by this current crop of useless players.

Why bother with all those tedious ball thingies.

Just cut straight to the adverts.

Apparently Skipper Root feels "England has taken a big shift forward in a number of areas " - I wonder what areas they are ?

I think he's being harsh on himself. They just need to sort out the batting, bowling and fielding really.

It's a left field choice (and I did say IF they want to go outside the existing group of players) but he's a county captain and an opener with an excellent technique, so it's not totally barmy. However, if England did want to look further afield, there'd be more obvious choices: Sam Billings wouldn't be a bad shout and, as mentioned, Rhodes could be in the running.

I don't think they will do that - it's not the England way. They did it with Brearley but he was an excellent captain with a long record of success but if they want to be radical, there are options.

Anyone who suggests Morgan clearly knows nothing about cricket. He hasn't played any red ball cricket for the past three seasons, hasn't played a test for 10 years and has got a dodgy back. His test match average is 30, which doesn't suggest someone who's a shoo-in for a place.

I think the point is Morgan would be a specialist captain, much like Brearley. He isn’t good enough on merit to make the team, but such is his leadership and man management if he averaged 20 he still warrants his place.

But he has no experience managing apart from limited overs. I'd argue you'd pick Burns ,he is a good county captain and our least shit opener

It’s a fair point and I’m not advocating Morgan, but responding to the post previous.

I think the Guardian writer is fully aware of Morgan’s lack of red ball cricket, but such is the shit show at present, it’s a option worthy of consideration.

Personally I’d give it to Broad for 12 months, just to get a bit of backbone back in the team.

Broad seems to genuinely care and is worth a place in the team pretty much without question. There are precious few who fall into that Venn diagram right now. Give him a shot to the end of the Ashes in 2023 (if nothing else he loves winding up and beating the Aussies) with a view to blooding a new captain to replace him then.

I think Broad is a great option. Brearley wasn’t captain until 34/35 I don’t think. Root had it to early imho. It also doesn’t seem like a very welcoming environment for new players to come into, and dropping the likes of Broad and Anderson because you want to make a statement about a fresh start just seems ludicrous.

At this point we don’t need a long term plan, we need to win a red ball test series, preferably the next one. Then start to reshape. Whatever is going on, Root appears to be part of the problem in terms of running the team.

But Brearley played lots of first class cricket and was a regular captain for his county (with some success). He had also previously captained England U25 and Cambridge University.

Morgan has next to no experience captaining a F/C team (I don't know if he has any). It's a crazy idea.

Actually, the whole escapade smacks of bad planning. Since I've been watching cricket, there's generally been a captain waiting in the wings: the fact that there's not one is, in itself, a reminder of the mess at the top of the game.

If we’re going for a decent county captain I’d go with James Vince. Got dropped for getting to 20-odd and getting out, but right now that would be an improvement on most!
