Blimey, this is an old thread.

If you look at Scholes for England he was an attacking midfielder. Post England and old age, he became a passing deep lying midfielder.

Zidane reinvented the central midfielder. Big and powerful and good on the ball.

Both creative midfielders. Zidane was not known for his power, more his intricate skill. As for Scholes, I'm not sure you understand the definition of "box-to-box midfielder" Piers. Scholes was way too clever and intricate to be given such a tag.

Lots of the players mentioned as creative midfielders have retired, or are towards the end of there career. (Fabregas notable exception).
Has the game moved on in England? There is an argument that even the holding midfielder's need to be able to pass well these days. Think of Song's passes to Van Persie last year. They were beautifully weighted balls over the top of a defence.
