Her Majesty is at this very moment sending her ships to areas that cannot be reached by road. (said slightly tongue in cheek)

The Navy is always helping out with natural disasters and can provide medical aid and helicopters which are urgently needed.
Money is required without a doubt but not all aid is monetary.

Thats a very good point Yorkie. Shame a large proportion of our armed forces are busy helping Bush destabalise the Middle East.

I think the factor that many people have forgotten is that this disaster has by and large only affected small areas of the countries involved, namely the coastal strip. The tsunami devastated up to a couple of hundred metres inland, the rest of the country remains untouched in physical terms. The food items required to feed those who remain are available from elsewhere within the individual countries, what is needed if we want to provide instant support is money.

In the longer term we would be better off providing people who can help restore infrastructure, civil and electrical engineers for a start. I heard on the radio yesterday that some towns or villages will need to be rebuilt either from scratch or just be abandoned and replaced by settlements elsewhere, that if nothing else made me certain of the severity of the task being faced, and that doesn't address the physical or mental scars on those who survived.

I fully accept that stuff is happening behind the scenes but you can't build houses with warships. The Palace line was a bit off the subject and is just a bugbear of mine. I am far from a socialist, communist, leftie or whatever to want to call it but it really bugs me that their are hundreds of millions of pounds worth of art, property etc that "belong to the people" that we never get to see. Meanwhile, there are (genuine) homeless people, long waiting lists for life saving operations, rampant crime etc. etc.

I know there are no easy answers but something like this makes me despair for our so called civilised nation. It is why I gave up voting (which will apall a lot of people but I am not hypocrite enough to vote for someone I don't share views with)

Anyway, I'm getting off my soapbox now. I am as guilty as everyone else when it comes to inertia in such matters. Just letting off steam.

Going slightly off topic the sailors have engineers amongst them who do repair bridges and provide medical aid so warships do help in a disaster area. Helicopters can airlift casualties to hospitals.
I read about it all the time in the Navy News.

At an even acuter tangent Buckingham Palace is open to the public to view.

Back to the disaster, I agree that everybody should give as much as possible as soon as possible.
Water purification is a priority to stop typhoid, dysentry and cholera killing as many people as the original waves.

I think Gully you need to take into the account that the area within a few hundred metres of the coast is often the most heavily populated and where a majority of the road and rail links run.

The England cricket team have given £15,000 and the PCA (Professional Cricketers Association) a further £5,000.

My daughter gave a fiver of her Christmas money

With the death toll now at 123,000 and still rising I am unable to comprehend how much suffering is taking place in Asia. Indonesia alone has 80,000 confirmed dead-it is unbelievable.

On the appeal side of things-the Premiershite has donated 1 million and Everton have started their own appeal fund. It's a good start......

I'm off to Tesco in a few minutes to make a donation-pretty sure they'll have a collection point.

One of the worlds biggest disasters, thousands and thousands dead and yet you have to make a political point.

The public have shamed them by donating more than their first offer. Blair should hang his head in shame.

What Yorkie said...

And if Tony Blair should hang his head in shame-what about the French? Initial pledge from their government of 70,000-yes, that's 70,000!

You obviously haven't read many of my posts Yorkie. I am completely apolitical and have no affiliation to any party or politician.

My sentiment was called a personal opinion - I find it disgusting that our Government are in a bidding war with the British public when they should have offered £50 million in the first place. I think you will find that it is politicians making capital out of a horrendous disaster - not me.

As there was talk of over 100000 dead from day 1, I find it hard to believe that they have only just reaalised the scale of the disaster.

They should be even more ashamed. But I am a UK citizen and comment on my government.

I'm sorry if my views offend anyone but they are my views. I shall keep them to myself from now on.
