“ a large rise in GP appointments helped to boost the economy, the ONS said.”

Excuse my ignorance…..but how does seeing your doctor boost the economy?

So pleased someone else asked.

Weird, isn't it? Do they get paid per consultation?

I believe they do, yes.

You'll also get follow-on effects ... more GP appointments most likely means more prescriptions written, which means more drugs being sold. And more referrals to specialists, which gives them a boost, etc.

IMO, this result is just a continuation of the story from last year: while the surface of the apple looks fine, digging beneath the surface you find a rotting core. Economic growth based mostly on the health sector (in particular GP visits) is not sustainable and is not a sign of a healthy economy. If anything, it's the sign that something is broken. It's not the middle of winter, growth in GP appointments at this time of year should be a concern not a reason for celebrating a 0.5% economy growth figure.

Most GP practices are run by private companies, the government pays them from our taxes to treat us. We pay for the NHS twice basically.

A lot of these private companies are groups of GP’s. Which is why it’s a piss take that you have to jump through so many hoops to get an appointment.

its a headline graber because largest component rising. take it out and you have 0.32 rise from Science and Technical services and transport (all that air travel), which isnt too shabby.

A modest increase in that sector is nothing to sing about either, it should be bouncing back by a lot more than that but is currently being held back by all the problems with staffing levels at airports.

And then when you go a little deeper into the article, you have "consumer facing services" contracting by 0.1%. That's not a good sign, as it's indicative of declining consumer confidence - and this is a sector that is still lagging a long way behind when it comes to the Covid recovery.

They'll be crowing about full hospitals (with covid) as a positive indicator soon.

Don't forget the rise in GDP from Boris's resignation and the Tory leadership contest.

Sectors of the economy that will have risen:

Champagne quaffing on the Commons terrace.
Gents' tailoring.
Ladies power-dressing fashion.
Ladies hairdressing.
Campaign sundries - zoom meetings, room hire, travel, electricals, data research, hotels, food, bribes.
Timber for the treehouse. Then there's the wallpaper for it. That's not going to be cheap.
Aircon for the stables in the hot weather.

It all mounts up.

Suggests a lot of people are opting for private health as the Tories have brought the NHS to its knees

Could be. I may have to bite the bullet and get onto a private dentist soon. Can’t even get a check up on the NHS at the moment. I asked my local practice if they are taking NHS patients. She half laughed and said “no, dear”.

You don't meet many poor dentists, mine has 3 kids in private school.

Heard Amol Rajan give Zahawi a right going over on the Today programme.

He seems to be reluctant to tell anyone how his was going to fund his £36B tax cut until after he is made PM. It does seem so many of the candidates tax pledges trivialise our economic challenges. Utterly deluded..

Biting the bullet can’t do your teeth much good.

If you don’t do it, you might not have to go at all.

Sorry i did not at all mean to make you feel classless, life must be difficult, especially with your over excitement issue.
I think the best thing is not to hang around with nsc classless posters, there is still a way out of this circle of doom you have been involved with.

God bless you son.

Back on topic, I am getting RIGHT behind Truss.

I was a little concerned that Truss would win, as she would be an absolutely dreadful prime minister, but having seen that her major supporters are the comedy duo of Dorries and Rees-Mogg I'm sleeping a bit easier. Hilarious to see them on the news claiming that Truss is even more of a committed Brexiteer than the two of them!

Do these people not realise that we all know Truss was a remoaner, and originally a Lib Dem?
It was naked ambition that turned her to the dark side.

Just like a certain failed ex (we hope)Prime Minister of this country.
