Peter Ward - nothing more needs to be said.
Marco Van Basten - shame he couldn't play for longer, best player in the world when he was at AC Milan. That was an awesome team.
Eric Cantona - No one has ever played the beautiful game the way he did. Mad as a box of frogs with so much flair.
Alan Shearer - especially when he was at Blackburn. The best at receiving the ball with his back to goal then scoring.
George Best - was at least 25 years ahead of his time. If he was in the premiership now, he would be the best player in it.

Maradona was the the first footballing star I can remember, and is yet to be beaten. He was incredible.

I would say this is my top 5 favourite players to watch that I can remember:

1. Maradona
2. Ruud Gullit
3. Romario
4. (Fat) Ronaldo
5. Bergkamp

It was pretty tough leaving out Messi, (Smarmy) Ronaldo, & Zidane but these are the 5 players that stick out in my mind

Some of the answers on here are a dead give away to peoples ages (or thereabouts) and their lack of appreciation of former greats. That or some people wouldn't know talent if it was 2 inches from their face!!!!!
