For example i was travelling southbound on the A24 between Horsham and the Buckbarn Traffic lights and not 1 or 2 but 3 cars pulled over on the verge in separate incidents after braking hard for no apparent reason.

Anyone see this at 16.40 today?

Was it ladies applying there lipstick in the mirror.

How tides control the sea, and what becomes of me
How little things can slip out of your hands
How often people change, not to remain the same
Why things don't always turn out as you plan

These are things that I don't understand
Yeah, these are things that I don't understand

I can't, and I can't decide
Wrong, oh my wrong from right
Day, oh my day from night
Dark, oh my dark from light
I live, but I love this life

How infinite is space, and who decides your fate
Why everything will dissolve into sand
How to avoid defeat, when truth and fiction meet
Why nothing ever turns out as you plan

These are things that I don't understand
Yeah, these are things that I don't understand

I can , and I can't decide
Wrong, oh my wrong from right
Day, oh my day from night
Or dark, oh my dark from light
I live, but I love this life

It's to do with gravity and the movement of the earth on it's elliptical orbit around the sun.

How little things can slip out of your hands

You don't have your fingers close enough together

How often people change, not to remain the same

Evolution.

Why things don't always turn out as you plan

Poor planning, and failure to consider all the variables

These are things that I don't understand
Yeah, these are things that I don't understand

I can't, and I can't decide
Wrong, oh my wrong from right

If you are likely to get arrested or hit, then changes are it is wrong

Day, oh my day from night

Don't be silly.

Dark, oh my dark from light

Again, unless you are Stevie Wonder, no excuses

I live, but I love this life

Depends on your taken on religion and deities

Why everything will dissolve into sand

Not necessarily true Sand is made of minerals and tiny pieces of rock that have come from the erosion and weathering of rocks. The composition of sand varies from place to place depending on the sources and conditions of the local rocks.

The most common constituent of sand in inland continental settings (e.g. deserts) and non-tropical coastal settings (e.g. beaches), is silica (silicon dioxide SiO2), often in the form of quartz.

Arkose is a sand or sandstone with a high content of feldspar (an Aluminum Silicate), usually derived from the weathering and erosion of nearby granite.

Much of the fine white sand found in coral reef settings is ground-up coral (limestone) that has passed through the digestion system of the parrot fish.

Some places have sands that contain magnetite, clays, chlorite, glauconite, or gypsum. Sands rich in magnetite are dark to black in color. The chlorite - glauconite bearing sands are typically a green color. The gypsum sand dunes of the White Sands National Monument in New Mexico are famous for their white color.

Sand deposits in some areas contain garnets and other resistant minerals including some gemstones.

How to avoid defeat, when truth and fiction meet

Defeat - try harder. Truth and fiction - do you answer emails asking you for bank account details?

Why nothing ever turns out as you plan

See my earlier answer

So, sorted. Next.

Or when playing golf and blaming an aeroplane for flying 30000 feet over you and hitting the ball 2 inches off your tee!

Why Chinese people say right when they mean left
Why women don't have any sense of danger
Why I am sitting at my computer in the Olympic media village blitzed on fake Jim Beam at 3 a.m. logging onto NSC when I have to get up in three hours
Why I have to spend my kids' summer holidays in the SHITHOLE that is Beijing
Why anyone cares about the Olympics
Why Uncle Spielberg gets so wound up about no-one ever agreeing with him
Why Gordon Smith didn't score
Why is it so hard to find baked beans in Japan
Why has Maddie not been found yet
Why can't people get along
Why DK is such a bare-faced liar
Why has Dean Wilkins not got a job yet

Ends rant

Ah, this sounds like the beginning of the phenomenon known as the phantom traffic jam, as explained by Andrew Marr on Britain From The Air a couple of nights ago.

Phantom traffic jams are the queues that you sit in for ages, and then when you finally get to the front, you find there's nothing there- like roadworks, an accident, a merging of junctions etc- to actually cause the jam, and it seems everyone's bunched up for no reason.

The cause of this, according to the esteemed Mr Marr (and lots of traffic boffins) is principally drivers travelling too close to the vehicle in front. One brakes, causing the next one to touch the brakes, the one behind sees the brake lights come on and automatically brakes themselves, and so on, going back and back down the line of cars until everyone comes to a virtual stop.

So the lesson, punters, is don't drive so close to each other, then you'll dramatically reduce the number of jams you get stuck in.
