Quite how someone who teaches isn't seen as helping the economy is beyond me.

Thanks CG, I sometimes feel my extensive research into the finance and profitability of the adult entertainment industry is unappreciated, so your kind words touch me

I haven't read this whole thread but I have come across some absolutely awful teachers in my time through school, some very good ones as well who probably deserve double what they are being paid. You get that in all jobs. My mums a nurse, she deserves more money...dont see any of them being able to leave critically ill patients and running off on strike do you?

Ok, - just to add to the mix. My missis is a teacher, she worked as Risk Analyst in the city for 8 years and worked her butt off to be able to afford to change her lifestyle and become a teacher. She works long hours now as a teacher but even she knows they are not really that long - wow every week she may get home after 19.30 a couple of nights (she is in school for 07.45). The holidays are a bonus and not deserved (but welcomed in our household...). Teachers really need to get a grip on reality and take a step back and look at other jobs, if they did they would realise they are on to a winner and should stop moaning...

your wife must be in a good position to compare the relative merits of a professional career in the private sector and teaching... a) does she think teaching is "easy" compared to her last job? b) how does the pay compare?

Not Luton! Thank God
Teachers work bloody hard, my girlfriend is a teacher and my mum was a teacher. This strike is pretty hypocritical though as its about the pay award that independent review body has given them. The same body that has increased teachers wages at rates much higher than inflation in previous years.

Some of these unions just like the publciity that comes with striking. They can claim to be working class heroes by standing up to the oppresive tyranical government.

a) She does not see teaching as easy, the jobs are not comparable.
b) The pay is obviously worse but if you pro rata the hours worked per year i expect the hourly rate difference would not be as vast as expected.

A lot of teachers I know say they think the holidays are too long anyway. They get bored, though they admit it is not a bad problem to have!

They think it woul dbe better to have shorter terms and more of them, reducing the holiday blocks.

this idea of comparatively decent pay if pro rata'd across the year might work in some cases (eg terry's missus) but it sounds to me like teachers actually work a lot MORE hours per year than the average person in a similarly paid/qualified job...?

Teacher: approx 60 hours a week x approx 40 weeks = approx 2,400 hours

£30K a year white collar worker: approx 42 hours a week x approx 46 weeks = approx 1,932 hours

A few years ago West Sussex Coutny Council carried out a survey of how they should consider changing the school year. One option included changing to a 5 term year which would have reduced the summer holiday to 4 weeks and provided more two week breaks across the year. Most parents I know voted for the 5 term year but when the results were announced the chosen option was to keep the 6 week summer break.

Somewhat puzzled I contacted WSCC Education department who told me that the vast majority of parents had voted for the 5 term year but the teachers had told then that they wanted to keep their 6 week summer break. There had even been a veiled threat of union action if the 5 term year was adopted

There was demonstration near where i work - what happened went like this

NR - How much do you earn?
Demonstrator - That's none of your business
NR - Yes it is, if you are asking me to back your demands for better pay then to make a judgement I need to know what you earn.
Demonstrator - erm. I'm not going to tell you.
NR - In that case I can't support you.

I, and about 4 other people, walked off.

That is correct, and the threat was less than veiled.

It seems the only people protecting teachers on here are people who's other half etc is in the profession. It certainly doesn't give an objective view does it - I mean you aren't going to come on here and say ' Oh yes my partner is a lazy sod and has had it good for so many years and now it's good to see they aren't getting everything their own way' are you. At the end of the day there will be good and bad as in any job. The problem with having unions in the workplace is that they exist to protect the work shy.

I don't personally know anyone who's a teacher but I can appreciate how hard they work and especially nowadays having to deal with parents.

Does that make it more of an objective view?

First NUT strike in how many years? Mel and Kim were No1 when they last had a national strike, not actually arecord of militantcy?
