Robot Chicken
Seriously?
In tonight's programme:
Roadshows are usually reserved for radio stations and boy racer magazines, but Albion chairman Dick Knight and chief executive Martin Perry are planning a special one-off Falmer Roadshow to show fans what they can expect at the club’s new home when it opens its doors for football in 2010.
A while has passed since that historic July date, the 24th to be precise, when Albion learned they had received the green light for a new stadium at Falmer. We collectively held our breath for 42 days while the appeal process passed, and since then there has been a drip-feed of good news stories on Falmer...but get ready for a positive dousing early next year. Not quite like the one Des Lynam got as part of the Falmer For All campaign, but one of information as Dick Knight and Martin Perry are currently planning a presentation open evening for supporters to see what progress has been made in the last three months.
Most of the time has been taken up with very important stuff: working on the legal agreements, sorting out funding, inviting expressions of interest from contractors preparing tender documents and vital planning meetings – but the really juicy stuff from the supporters’ perspective is the plans for the interior of the stadium.
The original layouts were drawn up nearly ten years ago, and things have moved on since then.
There have been all sorts of changes since 1997. Football and technology have advanced meaning the stadium’s inventory will change. For example, with mobile phone technology the press box won’t need so many phone lines; however journalists and photographers will expect access to a wireless broadband service. And down in the basement digital technology means we don’t need a darkroom any more!
The construction industry has changed too which means that the Albion is looking at ways in which it can build the stadium more efficiently and be kinder to the environment by considering how it can reduce the carbon footprint of the stadium. All these angles have already or are currently being covered by Martin and the project team and once finalised the club intends to consult on the revised plans with staff, players and most importantly the fans.
“The idea is to give supporters an idea of what has been going on behind the scenes for the last few weeks and months,” explained Perry. “People are keen to see work beginning on the site, but there is still a lot to do before that happens. What we will show the fans early next year will give them a picture of what we have been up to in the last few months. We will have some new graphics of what the stadium will look like - plus the proposed floor plans of each of the different areas of the stadium.”
Fans will also have the opportunity to make their own suggestions and give input – either in person, in writing or by email. “We want the fans to have a look at what we have done and then make their suggestions and give us their thoughts. Similarly we will be asking the players to give us their views from their perspective, together with all the other different departments of the club.”
Meanwhile, Albion season ticket holders and blue members will soon be receiving the first of two exclusive DVDs – as part of their respective season packages. In addition to all the goals from the start of the season up until the Cheltenham FA Cup replay, an exclusive interview with George O’Callaghan and highlights of the All Stars v Legends match which preceded Kerry Mayo’s testimonial, the disc also includes a special feature on the club’s fight for Falmer.
Season-ticket holders will receive a special edition gold-cased disc, with blue members getting a blue-cased disc. Both contain the same content and all discs will be posted out around Monday 15th December.
Details of the presentation evening will be announced in Seagull, on the club’s website and to the local media.
