How much would BML2 help reduce the wait at Falmer station ???

bml2-map2.jpg

Direct trains could run from Brighton to London via Falmer :moo:

I don't think it would make an awful lot of difference unless they are upgrading the stations between Brighton and Lewes.

It would mean more people heading towards Lewes, which would make things worse for people heading eastward.

Could have two separate queues; those heading to London and those heading Lewes and Eastward ???

On a related note, I see they have revised the plans on Brighton Station and are due to vote on it next week :clap2:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-sussex-19705460

A new proposal for the redevelopment of Brighton Station has been drawn up following a public consultation.

Plans by Brighton and Hove City Council include the relocation of the taxi rank and improved pedestrian access.

Three separate proposals were put out to consultation and according to the council, the new plan is a result of the feedback.

It will be voted on my members of the council's transport committee on 2 October.

Without more platforms at Brighton would BML2 make much difference? Is there room for another one alongside the "East Coastway" side of the station if they borrowed some of the car park?

Like a dullard, I've been reading up on the proposals on the Council website.

Some interesting stuff, but contrary to that BBC report, the Council agenda seems to state that more consultations are required. The principal problem seems to be the number of stakeholders, some of whose priorities conflict with other stakeholders.

But the idea of sticking the taxis in Frederick Place (adjacent to the Prince Albert) seems interesting, especially if access to and from the Station via those old steps straight into Trafalgar Street / North Laine are re-opened.

This is what the PDF says:

BML2 begins at Brighton where three new platforms utilizing
redundant infrastructure can be created.
Coastway East line to
Kingston, near Lewes, is upgraded for faster and more intensive train
services. Falmer becomes an important station in the eastern
environs of the city. BML2 trains would serve Sussex and Brighton
Universities, enabling direct rail access between London, central East
Sussex, Kent and Surrey. Brighton & Hove’s Community Stadium
gains fast BML2 trains directly to London and beyond.
At Kingston, BML2 crosses the A27 to enter Ashcombe Tunnel
beneath the South Downs National Park. It passes under Mainline
East (Eastbourne-London line) where BML2’s connection with Lewes,
Eastbourne, Newhaven and Seaford joins. Next station, Uckfield, will
be 18 minutes from Brighton and 10 minutes from Lewes.

This is what Lord Bassam had to say:

BML2’s other strength for Brighton is that it puts Falmer on a fast main line to London. The AMEX Community Stadium is proving an enormous success and has, I’m delighted to say, defied its critics. In fact it has proved so popular that efforts are in hand to increase parking, but BML2 would transform access with direct train services from London and towns across the South East. This would be a win for the environment, the stadium, the city and the local economy.

BML2 would be great for fans travelling from the north-east of the county and Kent/Tunbridge Wells, and would also open up these areas to a bigger fanbase. The campaigners should approach the club and get them to support the scheme. It's an absolute no-brainer - not least because it is a viable alternative London-Brighton route when there are problems on the main line.

That will be a nightmare for East Sussex fans and those who think longer trains will be the answer are wrong as its not the length of the train that causes delays on the Lewes bound side.

Correct. It's the stupidity of the staff who stop fans on the bridge while trains leave only part full.

Actually it not really that, its the stupidity and selfishness of the fans - Those going to seaford will not board a Lewes only or Eastbourne trains and vice versa meaning the platform remains half full of fans so those waiting cannot get on the platform.

All positives
In the mean time it's probably worth all Albions fans on twitter to help spread the word by following BML2 INFORMATION (BML2INFORMATION) on Twitter.
