Labour sold off the playing fields? Are you sure? I only say because I'm pretty sure I remember complaining to anyone who'd listen about where it would lead in the early 1980's when it first started happening. Maybe I'm old and my memory's failing me.

the Thatcher government changed the planning regulations that allowed playing fields to be sold. local authorities, both Tory and Labour, sold off the playing fields.

Much as I detest Thatcher - I don't think you can blame her for the current state of football (although her idea for identity cards to watch football may have killed it off if anyone had been stupid enough to implement it). I didn't think teachers were paid extra for running sports teams.
As has been said football is not dead and is probably played more than ever. It's just the professional game that is duller in my opinion - you can blame that on Sky and the premiership if anyone.

Football coaching at a youth level has improved significantly since the 80's, and some countries (Spain, Germany, Holland) have embraced this, and others, such as England, have not. Whilst the emphasis is on winning at all costs, and parents holler and abuse kids from the touchline, then we will continue to lag behind.

What is needed is greater education, of kids, parents, schools, the Premier League and the FA. It won't happen though.

Its got more to do with educating kids about "football" and the clubs being given enough time to develop their kids understanding of technique & ball control.

Instead, we stick kids onto a full size pitch to teach them how to get the ball from one end to another and teach them on how to beat a Young 4" goalkeepr in a full size goal with a simple kick of the ball into the top corner the posts where it will not be physicall reached without the use of a step ladder!

Add on to that, three lions passion and shouting at kids to get stuck in to them will win games...it all sounds pretty obvious to me its anything but the government and lack of playing fields!

When I was in school in the late 70's, early 80's, we only had 1, 80 minute Games session a week and 1 after school football session - hardly a huge amount of time to hone one's skills!
As someone from an earlier generation of schoolkids, I find even that amount of organised school sport shockingly low. We had two 40 minute indoor sports sessions a week, plus one 2 hour outdoor session each week. And opportunities to play in inter-schools competitions in the evenings and on Saturdays.

What's the situation these days?

I would also like to know as being in a different country I do not know. Judging from comments on here on other threads, not a lot by the sounds of things.

Also depends upon where you went to school - my brother was at private school and played sport every afternoon. At both private and better funded public schools here, this is also the case - lessons from 8 until 1. Sport from 1:30 every day except Friday with interschool competition every other weekend.

The kids who wanted to play more played at breaktimes, lunch and after school in the parks. They also joined local clubs and played there. I do not remember Thatcher stopping anyone doing any of that.

But she did kill Bambi.

What...Bambi dead...Oh! No.......

I could blame Thatcher for many atrocities to humankind - but football would be far down the list compared to the many honest British lives her administration destroyed.

Yep definitely Maggie's fault. Everything that has happened bad in the world since the day she was conceived can totally be blamed on her. No doubt the left wing people on here will be celebrating the day she dies. I, for one, think she did a great job running this country having taken it over in a total mess from a inept Labour Government (sound familiar?). She may not have been perfect & certainly made mistakes but at least she did what she thought was best for the Country & not her book sales after being in office. I'm sure you socialists could get tickets to watch a Scouse or Manchester team instead. Your views might fit in more up there.

Can I still blame her for privatisation? Hasn't done us that many favours in my opinion.

Yes it has thanks, much better paid and in a good job since the Railways were privatised.

Not surprised at £283 for a return from Manchester to London..........

Not really an issue due with what happened with me but you can buy in advance if you are savvy.

I do think rail fares are far too high but a captive market.

Just as well I don't have to pay them..........
