Yep, a new 20 goal-a-season striker would be most welcome, as he would have been last season. Even if he turned out to mainly score those Xg expected goals, he would still occupy opposition defenders leaving space for others.

If he doesn't turn up, I'm sure the club have been working on a plan B, so I remain hopeful another goalscorer(s) will emerge from the existing squad. Someone else mentioned that Lamptey should play further up the pitch. I put forward that suggestion last season, before he got injured. If fit, and up to full speed, he would terrify full backs, create a lot of chances and get us a few penalties.

That's exactly what he did last year.

Playing further forward would give him less space to run into. Although I think he could play a more advanced role, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I take your point, and that is indeed, exactly what he did last year. But in Lamptey's absence, we had a very accomplished and very successful right back - Veltman. He had England's Grealish in his pocket, and was in many people's eyes, including mine, our player of the season. He's not a wing back of course, and it would depend on our set up for each game, but I would argue, that where possible, we include Veltman as right back, assuming he is not needed to fill in elsewhere.

Back to Lamptey. If you are an opposing defender, and you know his speed is electric, are you going to venture forward? No. You're not. You may even double up on him. Having Lamptey in a more advanced role, as well as providing a potent attacking option, will keep the opposition left side in check.

While we're on hope, wouldn't it be f*****g brilliant if for the first time in the PL, that we weren't looking over our shoulders, and jostling for a mid-table position with mighty Leeds etc? We could relax and actually enjoy the football, instead of forever thinking it's the result that counts.

I was rather hoping Leeds have a worse case of second season syndrome than Sheffield Utd, whilst we are bothering the top six.

Getting fed up of people wanting a 20 goal a season striker, where is your ambition? I want a 40 goal a season striker.

Wherever Lamptey plays, and I think that he will be better at RWB than in the forward line, we need to manage his minutes a bit better. The lad is growing into his body ... as much as you can say that for a lad his size.

So we should use him in bursts, 45 mins here and there. We'll reap the benefits long term.

Ideally, we'll sign a specialist RWB to swap him around with. Though if we sign Cucarella, then to me, Solly is the man to go RWB

that would be splendid , although i can't see it unless someone nicks Phillips of 'em..! He's the spine of the team and it's easy to see how him and Ben bossed the championship.

So to summarise, it wasn't the same team that nearly got us relegated at all then?

Nope. Totally different.

In fact only similarity is that the shirts look the same at the beginning compared to the end.

Although the goalkeeper changed from a small chap and ended up being a big chap.

I don't think he ever played more than 60 mins last season.

But we're massively hamstrung (excuse the pun) by a player we know can't make 90 mins and have to sub. That was one of my early 'warnings' about Lamptey after he was picking up knocks

IIRC wasn't there a week where we were only 2 points up on Fulham and had played 1 game more? That'll have been when Fulham were on their winning streak, which promptly snapped and they didn't get the points to jump us when they played the game in hand.

When was this Fulham ‘winning streak’ ? They won 5 games all season :lolol::lolol:

He is not going to be a power house wing back again, after a hamstring operation - I doubt he will want to get to full speed in fear of it going again - personally I think we should sell up if the big money offers are still around.
