Samsung Galaxy Tab II 7" and 10.1" from Tesco Direct £158 & £238 respectively.
With Samsung cashback of £30/£50 making the final price £128 & £188. Very good value in my opinion.

Thinking about buying one of these, obviously not as good as the Nexus, but for basic surfing, email and games like angry birds are these very noticeably inferior in use ?

No they are very good for things like you mention. For the money they are superb.

Samsung tab 2 10 inch can be got for about £180 from carphone warehouse. The 7inch version is only £118 from carphone warehouse. (With cashback scheme from Samsung)

Nexus 7 and nexus 10 look nice.

iPad is good but not worth £399, they all do the same standard things. Internet, music, films, cameras, videos, apps etc. (I have iPad 3 and wish I had gone for Samsung or nexus and saved myself some money to be honest).

Kindle is the one IF your main priority is reading. The other tablets seem better for all the 'other stuff'.

A nice Chinese version for £100 (I'm not joking).

Ì tried that. Bought one, sent it back, bought the 2nd one and sent it back. Did this another 3 times but like the previous two they all had some fault whether it be poor battery life, auto rotate not working or simply just jamming and switching itself off repeatedly. Çrap!

Bought the Samsung Tab2 from Tesco in the end and it is extremely slick. Very pleased.

Which ones did you buy? I believe there are some good ones.

Well done iPad was the first tablet. There has to be an original with everything.

In terms of being better... I should hope it was the best all round tablet seeing as its the most expensive by a mile!

If the Samsung tab 2 is £180 from carphone warehouse currently the iPad with retina is def not worth £399. (I have an iPad 3 btw. Not anti apple at all - I do feel mugged a little with paying £399 when I look at the Samsung tab 2 10 inch and nexus 10 though!)

Currently £187 I think (inc £50 cashback) which is a bargain. I thought Apple products were supposed to hold their value, but a year ago I paid £400 for an iPad 2, and the same thing is now being sold for £280. If you paid £400 this year for an iPad 3, it's already been superseded. That Samsung is not going to be losing that much value. With the options now available, the new iPad and mini iPad seem far too expensive. And they're in no way perfect (youtube is constantly freezing on mine).

Thanks, what about watching TV/Video ? Daft question, but what else are tablets fit for, not anticipating doing any work on it.

Personally I recommend tri- cyclic anti depressants since benzodiazepines and their predecessors the barbiturates went out of fashion. Make sure you have a good stash ( 100 or so ) to wash down with neat vodka...make sure you have your car pointed towards the cliffs at beachy head with the handbrake off so your foot will slip off the foot brake as you lose consciousness and you will plunge to a painless and certain death.

Oh shit..sorry, I tought this thread was about how to end the suffering of Ashley Barnes taking our penalties for ever more.

Movies, Internet, Emails, Apps and downloading books predominantly

I don't think there's a device out there that is genuinely good at all these things.

Apps - iPad every time!
Movies - On the go - fairly cheap Android - I hook mine up to a large-ish telly and play through that occasionally, so iPad.
Email/Internet - either - does exactly the same with just one exception - Apple devices do not support Flash, so if you want Porn then its Android only! (er, so I hear, not that I'd know!)
Book - Neither... only worth doing on a dedicated book reader and never the touch screen versions. Assuming you'd like to take it on holiday at some point, laptops, tablets and most touch screen book readers become iffy in bright sunlight (the technology behind touch screens mean that they are too reflective and the brighter the sunlight, the harder they are to use.).

Not sure of the makes but 2 of them even had the Jellybean software. they were all between £70-£100 and all had some issue I'm afraid. The microphone search was useless as well.

I'm sure you're right and if you just want something to play angry birds and do a bit of internet then fine but I'm on mine a lot and for the extra £30 the Samsung Tab 2 is far superior in build and touch.

Touchscreen Kobo book reader works exceedingly well in bright sunlight, as I guess do most others as it is not reflective at all, in fact the brighter the light the better it is, just like a paper book

Anyone got an opinion on the Blackberry Playbook. 64GB memory and currently just £130 from PC World.

DO NO DO IT.

I have a blackberry bold 9900 its a piece of shit, the technology in it is awful, I would imagine that the tablet is very similar do not waste your money.

Sorry to be boring, but are you able to find out? There are a couple that seem well respected, and one that I could get from a UK supplier, so I'd have decent return options.

If you're on it a fair bit, it's got to be worth the extra £30. Those tablets from Samsung have got to be a good buy, but I'm buying for a 4 and 6 year old, so the £26 saving * 2 is handy.

My kids are getting one each for christmas which were 50 quid each. Mynold man tried them out before wrapping them thought they were quite good plus the supplier is from Bexhill. I'll PM the infomif you like.
The ones i had trouble with Ibought from Amazon, think Imight have just been unlucky though.

Yes please, might as well take a look. It's tricky to know what's best for them, my 4 year old is on my iPad 2 all the time, watching youtube (he's going to be swearing soon) and playing games. It'll be great if they can watch a film on the long trip to their grandparents too, and I think 7" screens will be fine.

There won't ever be a time (age) when they don't want one, so they'll use them until the break/become obsolete, so either buy cheap and replace in a couple of years, or buy a bit better and hope it lasts a little longer, I'm not sure which is the best route.
