Sussex v Durham CC Div1 at Hove

It's at moments like this that we have to wonder whether Monty can score a century.

Bearing in mind he's scored 1,100 first class runs in eleven seasons ... I think probably not. But he's having a go.

I fear that we are second best in most areas of the game at the moment. Monty will never take as many wickets as Mushy or grind out as many late order runs that he did. The other bowlers are all much of a muchness. What price a left arm swing bowler like Lewry now ? Our batting looks pretty fragile and even Gnasher has gone off the boil. Much as I sympathise with Yardy's condition we need him to play every game for continuity. If he can't mentally commit to that he should step down and concentrate on cementing his place in the middle order. Only brightness is our strength in Keepers. Maybe drop Vincent or Muzza and play Brown as a specialist batsman ?

Vincent doesnt play 4 day County Cricket, Goodwin will never be dropped by the current Management (and he does have over 1000 runs at 55 this season) and Brown has done very little this year (622 runs at 32.7 not good enough for a specialist bat).

We have a very fine 1 day side (hence 20/20 quarters and CB40 semis) but as a 4 day side we are not good enough for this division.

Funnily enough despite our continual failure when batting, its our bowling I am more worried about. Up to 2-3 years ago we had Kirtley, Lewry, RMJ and Mushy with Wright also available. Not one of those was on the field today. I think our pace 'attack' is probably the worst in Division 1, at least Monty has taken a fair number of wickets I suppose.....

Lots to think about for next year, even if we survive the drop this time around.

Lets hope Robbo can get some condidence in the camp, as we still have big chances today and our last two away CC games.

Murray is still one of the best batsman in the world and it would be mad to drop him from the team when he can post a big score at any moment, he also is a great fielder and has captained the side.

The bowling is light and Rana is a big loss, however we have players that Liddle that look excellent. Monty is bowling very well but needs the batsman to post a score to bowl at or some tight support at the other end.

The coaching staff should be making sure we dont panic, but players get it right out in the middle and ensure we dont give wickets away cheaply and make them work for every run.

Come on Sussex we can only get better.
