First I’ve seen this. Very disappointed. Can see why he wanted away, Sussex resisted playing him in County Championship games.

An opportunity to Carlson, Rawlins and Beer I suppose for all formats, if they stay.

One of the big earners off the books. We have to protect the club and survive right now.

How much does a big earner at Sussex CCC get? Do they get contracts for each type of competition and are some players available for all forms?

Did Wright get a pay cut when he stopped playing long form? Or not ?
Did Bopara come on a vastly reduced salary as he didn’t play long form?
Generally, Is having specialist short form players a Cost-cutting measure or tactical ?

Test-ground counties continue to scoop up the other counties’ best players.
The divide between test and no-test ground counties is going to become so big that domestic cricket iwill become uncompetitive .

I have no idea what individuals earn, I am no expert but if you look at the accounts sent out to members every year, it shows income and expenditure. The last accounts from year 2018-19 show a loss of £406,000.

For many a year our wages/expenditure at the club were about £1 million a year and our income was £1.2 million. Looking at the current figures these seem to be about £5.3 million overall income and £5.7 overall outgoing. Of which wages now seem to be about £0.5 million of that.

But I am no expert, I believe that Evans, Wells, Briggs were on good contracts so I am not surprised we have had to let them go alongside Dizzy. If you look at the income streams on page 12 of the report, we have lost most of them form match day to commercial sponsorship.

I believe we are well run and seeing the club drastically cut costs and wages will help it survive and keep our club.

Two points to note in the report is we still sit on £9 odd million pounds. I assume this is the last of the Spen Camra money, that can only be used for infrastructure and not wages. This will be used for the planned works, I believe the cricketers pub has now closed ready to be demolished and a higher rise block of flats to be built.

The other is that the ECB has £200 million of reserves of which £23 million is passed to the counties. I sadly fear the bulk of this will soon go on the new 100, so big wages to the top players and to the select sides (franchises). This is the Premier League coming to cricket, this is start of the end of the season and game as we know it it Sussex.

Thank you, very helpful. £0.5m annual expenditure on (players ?) wages doesn’t seem particularly high when divided between the players. Could just about get half a PL footballer for that!

Well Horton seems very knowledgeable about what is going on and is one of very few I know who is supportive of everything they do. Well I am the opposite but would maybe think different if club communicated more about what is going on.
Why was Bopara signed to play all forms and then allowed to drop out of 4day games
Dropping Wells was one thing but when Salt was unavailable why was Thomason who is a bowler selected as opener and not Wells
Evans told not wanted for 4 day game so allowed to go to Surrey but would play for Sussex in 20/20. Why was he allowed to play for Surrey in 20/20 when he was contracted to play for Sussex.
Wright made it clear he wanted to do well in 4 day game and spent winter preparing including giving up 20/20 contracts. When Gillespie arrived in April told him he wouldnt be selected when the obvious thing to do would to recognise his effort and play him in first 3/4 games to see how it went.
I gave up my membership last year when I could see they had no interest in progressing or marketing the 4 day side

Someone like Luke Wright will be on £100k+. Someone like Finch will be on about £30k.

And Gillespie? Assuming he’ll be on at least as much as Wright that’s nearly £250k on the coach and 2 players. Doesn’t stack up with the £500k spent on salaries reported for last year, unless there were no other high earners (or some costs are paid by sponsors). Or do we receive a huge sum when we release internationals?

I’m waffling....

I'm not sure that's necessarily the case. Durham were hit with a massive points deduction for going bust; Yorkshire had to be bailed out by a rich benefactor and I don't think Glamorgan and Hants are exactly flush with cash. Lancs have spent a fortune overhauling their ground.

Warks, Surrey, Middlesex and Notts all seem to be doing very well though.

I believe that Archer is centrally contracted by the ECB and Jordan is incrementally contracted.

I'm sure Rob Andrew is still earning enough to keep himself in nice suits.

For a few counties (I’m thinking Glamorgan, leics, Derby, Gloucs, Durham, northants) it’s pretty much the case that when they produce a good player, he is taken off their hands. Maybe that’s always been the case. It feels as if we’re heading into that group now. Tbf, we have done well to keep out of it for as long as we have, attracting some already accomplished players over the years.

To be fair lots of questions there are for Dizzy. He happily came onto the radio every game and answered all questions he was sent, always directly and honestly.
He would of answered all of these questions, so I am not sure how better they could have communicated with you.
The only one I am aware of its that we would have loved to have used Laurie but Surrey paid to take one of our biggest earners of our books.
I am also not sure it is the club destroying the 4 day game, look no further than the ECB and the top. Prize money for the short format, eclipses that of the long form.
Sussex are very committed to four day cricket, Ben Brown said they loved the Bob Willis Trophy format this year as it gave everyone a chance.
I am already worried about the fixtures next year and whether they will schedule in any 4 day stuff in the key summer months.

You are easily pleased. He attended love in with Radio Sussex because he is a good media person and was never asked any awkward questions. How he was not asked how he can select a bowler to open instead of Wells who has 18 first class hundreds was hard to believe. Evans signed a 4 day contract with Surrey and then decided he didnt want to fulfill his 20/20 contract with Sussex. Gillespie said he was disappointed with this so why let him
Good for you for been positive but can assure you a lot wrong at Sussex
