If this is the case, then surely Stockport could be deducted points if the same happens to them?

I thought if a club were in relegation trouble the penalty is postponed until the next season (otherwise they would go down regardless - not much of a penalty). Or d the FA make up the rules as they go along?

If Southampton do enough to "stay up" then they will get the 10 points deducted this season and get relegated anyway.

If they would have got relegated without the punishment then the 10 points will be deducted next season.

I think they only do that when team's try and cheat and avoid the points deduction

I think they were already going down before the 10 pt deduction anyway, so there was no value in appealing that one.

This seems to be to be a pretty bizarre set of rules, holding off the punishment until they know where they will finish. I understand that they want to stop clubs doing what Leeds did and taking the points when the club is all-but-down, but in my mind they need to make a clear decision NOW on whether or not the points deficit is applied. At the point at which the punishment is declared, the FA should either take the 10 points off or, if the club look like being relegated anyway, should hold off and say that they will definitely take effect next year, no matter what league the club is in. None of this to-ing and fro-ing.

So if Southampton go down naturally, they'll start next season with -10pts.

If ever there was an incentive for us to stay up, this is about the 173rd.

Ha, brilliant. So they need the players to win the last two games so that the deduction takes effect this season.

Odd to think that even though they're down (and probably would have been without the deduction) they've still got a lot to play for.

This is the reasoning behind the 10 point deduction. Seems fair to me, they tried to side step the rules and have been caught out. Serves them right and a bit of retribution for playing out a 0-0 with Spurs in 1978.
