Name: Steven Reid
Nationality: Rep of Ireland
Date of Birth: 10/03/1981
Height: 5' 11" (180cm)
Weight: 11st 10lbs (74.45kg)
Previous
Clubs: Millwall
Position: Midfielder

A product of the youth system at Millwall since the age of 11, Steven played for England under 16s and made his senior debut for the Lions at 17.

Opted to represent the Republic of Ireland through a grandparent and followed his under 21 debut with a call-up from Mick McCarthy to the 2002 Irish World Cup squad.

He appeared in the Republic's three group games and was Ireland's Young Player of the Year for 2002.

A very adaptable player who can operate effectively on either flank or even at full back. Last season he made a big impact the New Den as a left winger, contributing some stunning goals. He has made 139 appearances for Millwall in all competitions, scoring 18 times.

Steven joined Rovers in a four year deal from Millwall for an initial fee of £1.8m rising to around £2.5m subject to appearances.

That's Blackburn ROVERS btw.

Never mind the peripherals, let's discuss what he said as it was very interesting.

Personally i think he wa spot on when he defined that we lost to two defensive errors in that the keeper fluffed the catch and Butters & Hinsh got in a tangle after the ball was given away cheaply for Derby's winner. What i didn't agree with was his explanation of Hinsh's position in the first half. He seemed happy to declare that it worked because it totally took one of their players out of the game. What he neglected to mention was that Hinsh was also out of the game and is not an attacking player and additionally they were running through the centre of our defence. Their first goal was the result of the bloke drifting wide and then passing it back inside to man that Chippy should have been tracking more closely.

The resaon he gave for putting Hinsh back in defence for the 2nd half was that he thought they were killing us with Huddlestone's long diagonals.

Very interresting stuff though!

He did say that Hinsh was out of the game, but that it was worth the sacrifice as it left Chippy with a more free role.

Well, bit harsh on Chippy that. We were committed forward but Mayo made a mistake and they counterattacked.

And what a counterattack! The running and movement of Bisgaard and Rasiak was superb, and their inch-perfect passes to each other even better. This was Serie A quality football, and not surprising that, as both Bisgaard and Rasiak have had links with Serie A clubs in their careers.

Some time you just have to acknowledge quality, and be grateful that this is the kind of players you get coming to Withdean these days. Best bit of football in the game.
