In my own strange world
They didn’t actually get there although the bases were built. President Kennedy said it would be an act of war between the USSR and the USA, Khrushchev backed down and turned the ships around, averting a nuclear war, if he had not, none of us would probably be here now!!
Sorry I got it wrong, can`t say I remember it too well as I was very young at the time.

1990 - Liverpool won their last league title, Man U beat Palace in the FA Cup final, England had a semi decent world cup, euro ban from Heysel gets lifted, quite a good year for English footie!
Outside of footie, Thatcher is forced to resign, Saddam Hussein is being a bit of a dick and the first ever poundland opens!

Without even looking it up, I believe it was one of the hottest, driest years on record...drought orders in place, lakes drying up, standpipes in the street, feeding ice lollies to the polar bears at London Zoo etc.

It seems to have become the standard by which all other hot years are measured...can you tell what it is yet?

Was it 1796 ?

Sorry I got it wrong, can`t say I remember it too well as I was very young at the time.

No criticism intended, it just awoke memories of that time, I was 15 then, and remember wondering if this was going to be the end. It came so close to WW3 and if it had, Great Britain would have been annihilated with both President Kennedy and Khrushchev playing poker with everyone’s lives. I remember the relief of the whole country felt when the ships carrying the missiles turned round. Of the historical events in my life involving real life tension and drama this and the ill fated Apollo 13 mission probably stand out the most.
