I don't think anyone believes that Spain has more racists than us. The difference is that the Spanish FA seems to tolorate it.

THAT is the issue.

The racist chanting at the game last night was, of course, f***ing disgusting - a view shared strongly by my Spanish girlfriend.

However, to characterise 40 million peope as racists as a result of some f***ing twats in Madrid last night is as stupid as a Spanish person assuming that all 40 million plus English people are racists because of some twats chanting "I'd rather be a Paki than a Kraut" at an England match.

I suspect that much of it was some cretinously stupid way of these fans in Spain to try and show support for their nobcheese of a Ron Atkinson-esque manager. Beckham said he'd not heard that sort of shit there before and they're not THAT unused to black people/footballers in Spain - I think there's been a few Brazilians etc.

As for walking off etc. if someone's stupid enough to be racist then they're stupid enough to enjoy trying to get a game called off, which I guess would happen. Here's holding my breath that the authorities deal with this - including that idiot Spain manager - properly.

Consider the effects of the England players walking off.

Spanish football would be in disgrace. The Spanish authorities would be forced to do something about the inherent racist problem with sections of their fans.

All black players in Spain and England would probably feel a lot better about things.

England players and officials alike would have come home to a hero's welcome, the Kick Racism Out Of Football campaign would have been given positive global publicity.

It was the loudest and most sustained racist abuse I have heard for many years. Depressingly it was seemingly accepted by the rest of the crowd who could have responded by whistling etc. to try and drown it out. I would be interested to know if any effort was made by officials to stop it. Action should be taken by the authorities against the Spanish FA; points deduction, ground closure etc. It doesn't help that the national coach has hardly been an anti-racist role model.

Anyone speak, or write Spanish well?

We should write a letter to a Spanish paper, not ranting but expressing our disappointment that a country with a team that completeley outplayed us were totally let down by a section of their crowd.

section... sounded pretty unanimous to me?

Disgraceful as it was, I suspect only a minority of the Spanish fans were involved. Personally, I think it would be unfair to the team and the rest of the fans, who weren't abusing the black players to take such action. However, just how it will be stamped out I don't know, I guess it never will, whatever the penalties are. It is a sad fact of life that there will always be people who think it is OK and even amusing, to abuse others, whether it is down to race, appearance, homophobia etc. All are equally despicable. Wayne Rooney throwing down his black arm band was also totally disrespectful, bearing in mind the reason why the players were wearing them.

Thank you Fran. Having a Spanish girlfriend (who is as appalled as we are by the racist chanting last night), and spending a lot of time in Spain as I do, I read this thread with increasing frustration. Does nobody see that accusing all Spaniards of racism because of the action of a bunch of people who may well have turned up at the game specifically in order to abuse black players is in itself an act of racism?

There will be plenty of Spaniards who are deeply ashamed of their compatriots' actions last night, especially those living in this country. Can we not compound what's already an abhorrent situation by firing mindless generalisms back at them, please?

Whilst I agree that it is racist in itself to pigeon hole all Spaniards as racists. That however large, it was still a minority of the crowd that were doing it (probably a section near the microphones).

It is fact that the Spanish press do not vilify high profile culprits of racism i.e. the Spanish coach. It is also apparent that bugger all was done to kick any of these idiots out of the ground.

I agree. They've probably just been complacent on the issue and I'll guess (facts, as you put it, are always preciously thin commodities when dealing with issues like this) that that complacency will now thankfully be gone.

I'm just about old enough to remember the change in attitude at the Goldstone - monkey chanting was everywhere for a while in about 1977-8 when I started going as a kid and it took a fair while before they started getting shouted down by other members of the crowd. (I remember a very loud "shut up you bloody idiots" in the SW terrace in the early 80s). I don't remember the slightest action being taken by the club or the police in those days at all.

You guys are all right in saying that we cannot condemn all Spanish for being racist, of course we can't.

It was a minority last night, but a LARGE minority. A handful of people don't make that much noise. I do honestly feel that we in Britain have moved far further forward than the Spanish in terms of racism. Think about how ALbion fans turned on the racist idiots at Colchester a few years ago. Last night in Spain, it was 1978 all over again.

If a loud minority of England fans had behaved as shamefully as the Spanish racists last night, I would hold my hand up and say fair cop if we were thrown out of the World Cup, I honestly would. Sadly, in these instances you have to punish the innocent fans too, in order to get through to the c***s.

It is becoming more and more obvious that the "black" England players are being abused whereever we play these days. Any european game we paly tends to have this, and to be honest in England it does happen, but we are more attune to it and are not afraid to show our displeasure if someone nearby is engaged in it. Wether anyone is prepared to do anything about it is debatable as in the situation at Crewe.

What amazed me yesterday was the utterings from the Spanish manager who had a go at the British colonial past suggesting everyone hates us. i am not going to disagree with that at all as I ahve found living in Africa and travelleing that most people do hate the Brits, we do not help ourselves with the behavior of us in holiday resorts, however putting things into perspective, Cortes massacred a whole civilisation in South America. I can't remember the Brits doing such a thing.

Again EUFA and the FA/Blatter will turn a blind eye and deaf ear to all of this.

Last night was the first time I ever thought of switching off the match partly because we were crap, but mostly because I was getting so fecking annoyed by the monkey chants!

Couldn't agree more. I don't think I have ever enjoyed a football match less than I did last night.

The racist taunting was an absolute disgrace and the Spanish FA should be ashamed.

As should the English team be ashamed for a gutless spineless ineffective pathetic performance on the pitch.

As someone who is half English and Spanish (I class myself as English), I find the whole thing very depressing. As has been pointed out Spain is where we were in the '70's. The sad thing is that many of the people who made the monkey sounds most probably see there actions as just a way of winding up the opposition rather than being racist .. very much a '70's concept.
If you want to ban Spain then most European and asian countries would also have to be banned as they have problems with racist crowds. We have to accept that as a country we are more attuned and advanced than many of our neighbours wrt racism.

I wonder how many on the list would have referred to the Spaniards as 'f$%king Spics@ or Dago's , there were a few in the pub last night ???

I was also really embarrassed by the apparent desire of the England players to try a cripple anyone wearing a red shirt, it was a friendly for f$%k sake:shootself
