100 % this. All religious activity should be banned in schools and public institutions (although I’m indifferent about the rebranding bit as it just replaced something equally primitive).

This could be a dangerous path to follow.

It will lead to a rise in antidisestablishmentarianism.

( Not really bothered myself, I just wanted to use the word ‘antidisestablishmentarianism’ in a thread, and now, I’ve used it twice.)

I don't think the OP is getting the reactions that were hoped for here.

:lolol:

I honestly don't know what he was after, but I was certainly expecting some posts with the words 'foreign' and 'swamped' in them. Never mind, Das Reich will be along soon to restore law and order ???

I'm with Tony Benn on one part of this. As an athiest, I think that Christmas is an excellent festival, great for family and the kids. Our 10 year old and all her friends still apparently believe in Santa.:facepalm:

I am all in favour of making the uk a fair and equal society. However, traditional festivals are a peculiar thing. Bank holidays, too. Part of tradition. There was a considerable kerfuffle among the conservative when the socialists brought in a socialist bank holiday. I was not in favour, althought 'not bovvered' would probably sum me up.

Introducing traditions from minority groups and making them national and mainstream is OK with me, albeit it won't really catch on. Not till we have been 'swamped', at least. Introducing new bank holidays has no justification as far as I'm concerned though. Not in the name of equality or fairness. I see no clamour for it either. I know and have worked with countless members of different religious groups and have never heard one, ever, griping about their festivals not being bank holidays.

So, if this is a fishing expedition, the OP needs a better rod, better tackle and should seek water with more catchable fish, I suspect.

And how many days annual leave is standard ? I would rather take days off that suit my life than have yet more enforced because of a religion. America has a similarly long list and the average employee pays with less annual leave.

12 days annual leave standard. I'd rather the same re taking leave.

And pogroms. Don't forget pogroms.

If we have a bank holiday for Eid, how about resurrecting Empire Day( 24th May) for all the more’ traditional’ subjects of Her Majesty?
We could all wear baggy shorts and pith helmets, take tiffin at sundown and listen to the natives being restless.

Easter is actually a pagan festival of the harvest hence eggs, bunnies and the date changing. Christians just used Easter to celebrate optimus prime rising from the dead.

Thank God :)wink:) for that, we can simply replace Chocolate Easter Eggs with Chocolate Harvest Eggs.

It was the only thing holding me back, but I'm all for this changing all bank holidays to secular now

But as goldstone so eloquently said, this is ENGLAND. So we should stick with good English traditions like Turkey for Xmas dinner, exchanging Christmas presents, a Xmas Tree, Father Christmas all dressed in red, three kings, three wise men etc. I certainly couldn't be doing with strange foreign traditions ???

I presume this is a joke? Just in case it's not .... NO. Why should the 95% of us who are not Muslim want a holiday for their religious festival? What about the Hindus? What about the Buddhists? Remember this is ENGLAND.

TBH I'd be more than happy for every religious holiday you can find to be a public holiday.

And at 8pm we all have to dress up as Michael Caine in Zulu and sing "Men of Harlech" on our doorsteps.

Where will it end?

Only last night i watched a programme on Youtube that stated there are 3000 religions on Earth today , speaks for itself what would happen if they were all given holidays . This is a Christian country so all the main Christian holidays should be a given , all other religions should of course be respected , but those observing them should use a day off their holiday as happens in most other countries regarding other religions than the main religion of that country .
