The right to bear arms is a hugely damaging policy, no question I agree. Not sure the parents who will be identifying the corpse of their son/daughter tonight quite "deserve what they get" though.

In any normal, reasonable society that would be an absurd suggestion. However, in America you can kind of see the logic. Obviously the sensible thing would be to ban them for everyone but that ain't gonna happen now is it?

In general Americans are egocentric and slightly disturbed. Every time they have an incident like this they bleat on about how did it happen - well its f***ing obvious how it happened.

It was the reaction from one eye-witness to the slaughter at Virginia Tech that stunned me, he was asked if this was proof that there were too many guns in American society, his response was that there weren't enough and if he had had one he could have killed the gunman.

I absolutely refuse to believe this story until I have seen the obligatory pictures of knots of weeping girls in group hugs, encircled by grotesque, bloater townsfolk wailing "Why, oh Why?".

And while we're about it, we'd better have the one student who was 'spared' and who is now giving thanks to Gahd. Being too polite of course to curse Gahd for allowing the other poor bastards to take a bead.

And then? We'll be needing some minor Dem politician to sacrifice their career by calling for the banning of handguns, while Hillary and Barack sensibly keep stumm. Finally, a National Rifle Association spokesman, claiming Americans' unending, inalienable right to arm bears, or whatever it is they do...

And then, they can all go away and sleep it off. And just get ready for the next one....

But then this is a nation where a substantial number believe in the literal truth of the story of creation, so what hope is there?

And no matter how much evidence piles up debunking the creation myth, and however many liberal Christians reluctantly accept that, the harder the creationists dig in....

What makes people so desperate for a God and, worse, for a literalist interpretation of ancient myths that they'll make themselves look utterly ridiculous (Yes folks, you'll see humans alongside dinosaurs in the USA's Creation museum) in its pursuit?
