I think there was two different endings filmed.

Because its been commissioned for a series they went with the cliffhanger ending. If it wasnt then it would have been a different ending im sure - tho no idea what.

They did it for Life on Mars and then Ashes to Ashes.

Has it been commissioned for a series though ? When Martin Freeman as interviewed just before the first one aired, he said they were hoping it would get picked up but they didn't know.
