A great player who got on with his football & intelligently kept a low-profile outside his place of employment.

The Boy Scholsey done good.

never seen anything like him

Agree but nearly all these goals are scored from outside the area, from very near the centre of the goal, and rely on pure pace and swerve, and probably on ocassions the unsightedness of the keeper, to beat him.

I wonder how Scolesey would have coped with the old heavy leather ball which didn't move in the air away from the keeper so much?

FRUIT OF THE BLOOM
Scholes is the best player England have had over the last 10 years or so.
Ridiculously moved around the side which ruined him and England at that level.

The only English player of recent times who would in his pomp have been geting into Barca's current side.
Even said by Guardiola.

Pure class.

Couldn't agree more. Disgracefully shifted out to left Midfield by England before he understandably decided he'd had enough of international football.
Rightly hailed as the best English player of his generation by numerous foreign stars.
let's not forget he also came back from an illness which caused him to lose his sight.

Doesn't he have diabetes ?

I'm not sure how he didn't end up ruining at least one players career with some of the awful tackles he used to make, totally unsporting in that department & how people can call him the ultimate professional when he was constantly just being a spiteful arsehole on the pitch is a joke !
Although he was capable of some great football, it's just a shame he was a horrible little fvck at times..... Just my 2 penny's worth i suppose

Just been reading through Phil Mcnulty's blog on the BBC and never realised his team was actually Oldham. the quote below just made me laugh....

One personal memory that summed up Scholes came in Sapporo during the 2002 World Cup, when England prepared to play Argentina and he was making a rare public appearance at a press conference.

A huge contingent of Argentine journalists gathered at the front of the room and pushed one of their number to press Scholes with the question: "Who is your favourite footballer of all time?"

As they waited for what they expected as the inevitable coronation of their own icon and World Cup winner, Diego Maradona, Scholes shot back without hesitation: "Frankie Bunn." Cue utter bemusement.

With an irritated glance that questioned how they could not have heard of Bunn's stirring deeds, Scholes added: "Scored six goals in a League Cup tie for Oldham against Scarborough once, you know."

Bet the Oldham fans are disappointed with this news. He had said before that he wanted to see out his playing days with Oldham as he is an Oldham fan.

Great quote.

Paul Scholes spraying the ball around the bark is one of the finer sights in football. I would think players like Bridcutt and Dicker have learnt a lot by watching him.

Perhaps not his tackling though....!!

One of my fav players of all time, all round game was superb and played at the right tempo all the time, some great goals in there as well, would have hated to play against him as always in your face, if he had not retired from international football so early, he would have been the regular in the middle of the park instead of Lampard.

Good call. Naturally and actually a class above Lampard.

Successive England managers have built midfield around Lampard being a central & arrive-late-to-shoot midfielder, with others shunted around to accomodate him.

Shame Scholes for England didn't give it another 4 years.

Coaches on the radio tonight said it was Eriksen that p***ed him off by forcing him out left to accomodate others, whereass other countries / managers would have played him central alongside energetic ball winner.
