...if you mean changing names from something traditional like the Crown and Anchor to a brand name like the Slug and Testicle or some other contrived name that derives absolutely nothing from the locality or tradition then I would not call it progress.

You can blame the Zelgrain group for many of these travesties. They include

The Springfield >> The Open House
The Greyhound >> The Fishbowl
The Clyde Arms? >> The Engineer
The, um, f*** it, can't remember >> Mash Tun

Others...
The Green Dragon >> The Office
The Eagle >> The George Beard >> The Eagle

Thanks for that. Walking past the Office the other week probably triggered the post.
Also, one of the worst pubs in Brighton is no longer called the Compton Arms.
Who are the sinister sounding Zelgrain group ?

Zelgrain is a local pub chain started around 1990 with a couple of pubs, and ended up in about 1999 buying out a fella called Doug Lyons who had several pubs in Brighton.

Their offices, out of interest are upstairs at The Open House.

Oh yeah, just thought of another of their tinkering -

The Beaconsfield Arms >> The Leek & Winkle
The Counting House >> No Man Is An Island >> Um, forgot...
The Edinburgh >> The Game of Life >> The Eddy

I've just read the Zelgrain website and discovered that "they don't encourage the football crowd". Is that a good or bad thing?

Surely they don't mean us!

That used to be the Argyll, I thought.

Never understood why the Deryck Carver (last protesant martyr to be burnt at the stake in Lewes) in Black Lion Street changed it's name to the Black Lion.

Deryck Carver founded the Black Lion Brewery.

They're gonna be kind of stuffed when we get Falmer. The Open House is right next to London Road Station, and while they may not be putting up screens for footy matches, they may have to acknowledge that, if you go to Falmer by train, it is the last pub along that line coming from Brighton.

Yep, you're right. It was late, and I was tired. :)

I only remember from doing the Ale Trail the year that the name changed. It was listed in my book as The Argyll and I spent bloody ages trying to find the place!

The STAMFORD > Circus Circus. I like that one.

Thank goodness the Railway Hotel (Ditchling Rise) and the Cobblers Thumb remain the same

Mash Tun is a HOLE!!!

we went in there about a year ago and it was a niceish pub, went in there 2 weeks ago, was a sweaty grunge pit!!!!

Went to some more classier establishment next to the big HSBC, opposite Deep Pan Pizza,

unfortunatly so many citys need the big trendy bars as thats what makes the money nowadays, now the old pubs with the 60 year old man dribbling into his pint
