I remember Mars Bars going up from 8d to 4p

For a short time after the decimalisation changeover they were 3½p as this was the official conversion figure. They got rid of the ½p as it was so tiddly and then decide the current 5p is an ok size.

I've got a mate from Northampton & on her first day in the office she cheerily announced that she was going outside for a growler.

Turns out this is a Midlands expression for a cigarette. Mind you, I guess Americans would look on us with the same degree of bewilderment if you or I told them we really fancied a fag.
