Ignasi Miquel on loan, or someone else on a permanent contract?

Shame to loose elphick, problem with CB are that a pairing that works will always play, so people on the fringes or 4th in line want to move and I don't blame him, shame it wasn't a loan with a view to buy

Although it is also a position where bans are more frequent and injuries happen regularly. That, and our continuing need for a second quality center-half to partner Greer (Dunk - still needs to develop to cut-out his mistakes, ElAbd is just too small).

Sadly. A very good player in my view.

Just wait for the binfest... You're no longer allowed to write anything that could appear to be critical of El-Abd, no matter how true or relevant the comment is

el Abd clearly is our best defender, as he constantly proves. Certainly if he was flawless nobody would ever score a goal against us.
It's bewildering how people used to bang on about Lynch and Elphick yet berate Adam el Abd. Tommy is a nice fellow and all that, but would not have got a game in the Championship. I have seen him outpaced and robbed of possession too many times to count, or want to again. His desire to wander upfield and leave el Abd to fend off three attackers on the counter, was normal in every game I saw him play! His running to the North at Withdean to celebrate scoring was embarrassing because if you counted how many goals it cost us so he could get one, I don't think the balance would be in our favour.
Seeing him getting the ball nicked off him while he sauntered confidently, stridently, like a dressage horse in stripes was infuriating. Travelling all the way to Hartlepool to watch their player say "thankyou very much I'm having that" was the final straw of hope I had for him - the Southend goal at Withdean was another glaring embarrassment, as he ran alongside the player all the way to our goal, not putting in the slightest challenge for the ball - like a chaperone!
Yes, good luck to the lad at Bournemouth but it doesn't leave us with less options.

And you aren't allowed to keep presenting an old opinion which el Abd has disproved in spades. Too small for what?? Clearly Gus Poyet hasn't thought that. Small attackers LOVE tall defenders anyway, they get all sorts out of them with the ball on the ground. Anyway, how "small" do you think el Abd is anyway? Got a guess at his height out of interest?

I guess we now have some truth in the 'Elphick sold behind Gus' back rumour.

I don't see the problem with Calde being the 4'th centre half.
I guess if we weren't in the division we are, going in the direction we intent, one of the 'kids' would step up.

Not sure about that... I read it that bid came in and Elphick wanted to go and Gus has never stood in the way of players whow ant to leave. Elf knew he'd be 4th choice here.

Hardly! If you believe Elphick is his interviews he pressed for the move to guarantee himself playing time (initially a loan deal, but Bournemouth wooed him with a decent contract). The clubs policy is not to stand in the way of players if they wish to move on and they can agree a mutually acceptable price with the purchasing club. Gus didn't want him to go, but it wasn't done 'behind his back'.

More than happy with our 3 current centre backs, would be a bit peeved of the development of Dunk was halted to bring someone new in, particularly on loan.

Yeah I guess so, all plausible.

The bottom line being Gus now has to 'find' a centre half, if he's not prepared to use Calde, as fourth choice.
Unless Dunk at third choice is causing Gus concerns.

We all know it might not be as clear cut, as that, re LD.

He's about 5'10. But he is also about 5'10 wide, in a good way.

You'd have thought the natural player to mention as fourth centre back was Vincelot rather than Calde?

Guess that means that Romain is destined to leave sooner rather than later leaving Calderon as the utility player on the bench

Centre back is the one place where we don't have higher league standard experience (well that and striker but we were always looking for that) and obviously we could be down to 2 to choose from in the new year even if we dont get suspensions. No rush as we can always get a loanee but certainly an area that will need attention.
