Phone call from Tehran

Did anyone else just hear that awful phone call from Iran on CNN? Truly shocking, even after so many days of violence.

Young woman live on air telling her experiences. It sounds like the protesters were lured into an ambush and savagely attacked. She said students were axed through their hearts and other people were pushed off bridges. She heard a lot of shooting but didn't see the results as she ran. She was pleading for outsiders to step in and bring an end to it.

The poor CNN guy just didn't know how to respond.

One of the most dramatic bits of TV I've ever heard. In fact it was so powerful CNN are currently playing it again, just five minutes after first broadcasting it.

It is such a fascinating series of events there; I think it's a fascinating country. And the likely outcome of all this is looking increasingly hard to predict: it doesn't look as if the nutters are going to be able to slap down these protests and just hope they all go away.

That was an entirely illegal war. I don't see much comparison to be made between this situation and the Iraq war, tbh: the nutters in charge there are, like the nutters here, quick to create demons at the gate to cement their support, in the form of the UK and US. So the sabre-rattling Coalition of the Willing has to hold back this time.

They didn't invade because he was killing his own people though. The result of that war was that the killing internally increased.

The situation in Iran is a very different kettle of fish.

I think what we need to remember in all this is it isn't a story of good Western Style democratic forces against the evil autocratic Mullahs. It's one faction of extreme conservative shia muslims against a slightly more liberal faction of conservative shia muslims.
It is a power struggle among the elite caused by an election rigged in a bizarrely hamfisted way, and though we can identify with young students campaigning for more freedom, neither side is suggesting any changes to the fundamental principles of the Islamic Republic.

Let's not forget Burma, a lot of crap going on there that's not getting reported.
Last week, some religious leader openly stated they were praying for that opposition leader who spends most of her life under house arrest.

Result: 10 years in prison for "insulting religion"

Disgusting.
