Why the people paid for them

It's meant to be kept as a special reminder, unless its going to help a charity or something like that, in my opinion selling it to put the money in your own pocket is wrong.

Why on earth would someone pay £12k for a bloody olympic torch?!?!?!?!

Dinner party:

Guest: 'Wow, nice torch. Didn't know you were a torch bearer for London 2012'

Host: 'I wasn't, i paid £12,000 for it on eBay'

Guest: 'You f***ing sad act! I'm leaving, sod your dinner party! I hope your food is shit and you wank yourself to sleep in tears!'

The Olympic Spirit would seem to have been lost.

Selling the torches, although perfectly legal and they have been paid for (£200) by the bearers, just goes against what it's all about for me, just another reason why the games have become tainted.

Of course, in theory, you have a point. But if it were me, I'd take a few pictures with it, then get it sold. £12k is a lot of cash.

Exactly. It's disgusting. Having one of those torches is a privilege.

I didn't realise anyone except marketing bods trying to promote 'spirit of the games' bullshit and middle England who believe this hype in place of knowing anything about sport actually gave a f*** about a torch relay. The fact that Drogba and Will.I.Am. care enough about this whole thing to go to Swindon surprises me.

One wonders if there may be some appearance monies involved.

Didier Drogba and Will. I Am .........how are u 2 British?

I thought these games were for the Brits , not second rate celebs?

Coe and the rest have sold out to comercialism and publicity..

Oh and you name is William.....not Will.I.am.........

Games just for the brits? what a strange comment - i thought the olympic ideal was to involve as many nationalities as possible.

The ridiculous torch relay is a load of bollocks anyway. The carbon footprint is HUGE and it's an excellent excuse for more of the sponsors to get their names out and pretend that the whole thing isn't a money making exercise (well, it isn't for anyone LOCAL to the events that quite rightly want to try and make a buck).

And the Nazis came up with the idea.

It sold for £17,000 in the end. The next one up is on £10k already with over a day to go....

I wonder if any future relay participants risk getting mugged now? I wouldn't fancy doing the Salford or Toxteth legs!!

Judging by the huge crowds, the British public disagree with you.
